Apex Pokémon have been unleashed and it’s up to you to stop them.
The mysterious door has been opened, thanks to your efforts. Within the depths however, lies a secret power that no one saw coming. Team GO Rocket leader Arlo has stolen this power and has used it to create to Legendary Pokémon so strong, even your team leader doesn’t stand a chance. Apex Shadow Ho-oh and Apex Shadow Lugia have been let loose and it’s up to you to capture them and wield the power yourself.
Apex Legendaries

So what makes an Apex Pokémon so special? Your average Shadow Pokémon is strong, but limited in it’s move pool. Apex Pokémon will retain their signature move but with increased power. Purifying these Pokémon will boost their signature move even further. For example, Apex Shadow Ho-Oh knows Sacred Fire+, a stronger version on Sacred Fire. in Trainer Battles this move has a power of 130, while in Gym and Raid Battles, it will have a power of 135. Purifying Apex Shadow Ho-oh will change the move to Sacred Fire++. Gym and Raid Battles will see this moves power boosted to 155.
Apex Shadow Lugia on the other hand will know the move Aeroblast+. In Trainer Battles this move will have 170 power, while in Gym and Raid Battles in power is 200. Purifying Apex Shadow Lugia will change the move to Aeroblast++. Gym and Raid Battles will see this moves power boosted to whopping 225.
Now that you are drooling with excitement, I’ll bet you’re wondering how you can acquire these powerhouse Pokémon? It all starts with a ticket, to The Pokémon GO Tour: Johto event. This will grant you access to Special Research that you will need to complete, in order to unlock the Masterwork Research. This type of Research is design to completed over a long period of time, so it will take everything you got before you can get you hands on Apex Ho-oh and Apex Lugia. One silver lining here, after completing the Masterwork Research, you will get BOTH of these Pokémon, you do not have to choose between the two.
Special Research Rewards
Now I know I just glanced over the Special Research to get to the good stuff. So let’s back track a bit and find out what sort of goodies are in store here. We got some new avatar items for you such as Ho-oh Wings and a Lugia Mask. As well as a shirt based on which version you choose to play for the GO Tour: Johto, either a Ho-oh shirt (Gold Version) or a Lugia shirt (Silver Version).
