It all starts with episode one.
All Pokemon podcasts start somewhere. This start can be anywhere from simply recording in your bedroom to simply just getting a microphone with your friends. Either way, all of the Pokemon podcasts you listen to now have found their footing. They are in a spot where they are happy with what they are producing. Well, some are still striving to do better. And that is fine.
So in this feature for Pokemon Podcast Month we want to look at some podcasts to see where they have started and what their hosts think is their best in the last year. So go ahead and join us as we look back at the the episodes of Pokemon podcast past.

As the Pokeball Turns

Episode 1: “Community Building” ft. UpbeatData
David’s Thoughts: My “official” first episode was a review of the Lunar Event in 2022. I was nervous and unsure of how to talk without have any feedback. I only did that one topic because I have a habit of overthinking and backing out of things and I wanted to prevent that when I started.
Episode 37: “Melodies & Pokemon” ft. HisuianRyan
David’s Thoughts: I’ll say #37 – “Melodies & Pokemon” because of the interview with the music and showing what I’m able to do and why I added the skits to the episodes. The skit in that one showed where the podcast was a year ago when I had stepped away. I had never talked about it since returning and I felt it was finally time to present it to my listeners. I think I spent more time developing the skit than editing the interview itself, just because of how emotional the scene was for me and trying to make sure the scene conveyed the who, what, where, how, and why.

Pokemon Radio

Episode 1: Welcome to Kanto, Pallet Town, Route 1, Viridian City
Ceci and Derik’s Thoughts: Derik was totally cool, calm, and collected, and Ceci was absolutely terrified that if anyone listened, they would question why these two people thought anyone cared what they had to say. Luckily, Derik was right and Ceci was wrong :)
Episode 47:Snowpoint City Gym, Lake Acuity, Veilstone City/Team Galactic HQ, Mt. Coronet, Spear Pillar
Ceci and Derik’s Thoughts: Our episode 47 was Ceci’s favorite: Derik had never played Diamond and Pearl and had some theories about Dialga and Palkia that he thought were satirical, but actually ended up being correct :)

Pikapi Podcast

Episode 1: Worst Start Ever!
Anne’s Thoughts: My first episode might be the actual worst, the audio was terrible and I don’t know if it can ever be saved. But I remember being so excited to start this new endeavor, and so full of feelings watching the first episode again, knowing all that Satoshi and Pikachu had before them.

Ketchum All

Episode 1: A Wild Podcast Appears! (Again)
Lauren’s Thoguhts: So we technically have two first episodes. “A Wild Podcast Appears” and “A Wild Podcast Appears (again)”. (Our old episodes are mostly gone from the internet, but you can still find them on Spotify for some reason. I would recommend listening to the first episode for our current run though. The very first one I felt super awkward and didn’t know what I was doing. The second time around was definitely better, but I think first episodes are always a little rough. Caitlin’s Thoughts: Oho! I have two answers for this! Like Lauren said, years ago we gave podcasting a try. Both of us were in the middle of making some really big life changes and podcasting ended up not fitting into our lives as well as we hoped it might. Coming back, we opted to begin anew! There are still things I wish we could change (I think we finally have our groove now), but it is always humbling to see how far we’ve come! I was SO nervous back then. Somewhat LESS nervous now. Can’t wait to see where we go!!
Episode 8: It’s Not Okay (Lauren’s Pick)
Lauren’s Thoguhts: WOOF. It’s hard to pick a single episode because the joy I feel is often so closely tied to the shenanigans of the episodes we cover! Though, our episode “I Hope They Starve” (Lauren coming in CLUTCH with choosing names for our episodes) covers some of the wildest, back to back episodes we have publicly covered to date. It has a SUPER weird family (YUCK YUCK YUCK), an old man putting a pistol to Ash’s head, and a loveable bike gang! That’s an 11/10 from me!

Episode 12: I Hope They Starve (Caitlin’s Pick)
Caitlin’s Thoughts: Honestly, a lot of our episodes are wild. It’s just how the Indigo League is. My favorite is another crazy one called “It’s Not Okay.” It’s a three episode storyline where Ash visits Sabrina’s gym, goes to Lavender Town and dies. And Brock and Misty are turned into dolls. These were episodes we covered twice, but it was maybe even more upsetting the second time. I also had a lot of fun recording some of our upcoming episodes.
We hope you enjoy this look at these Pokemon podcasts’s humble beginnings and where they are now. Surely some things have changed but the love for podcasting is still there.
Thank you and come back for our next installment of Humble Beginnings.
