If you want to learn to make better banners in GIMP, try looking up tutorials in DeviantArt. Sifting through them can be a bit of a pain, but they're so worth it in the end--that's where I learned to do most of my stuff banner-wise, other than how to do overhanging characters on a transparent BG and using MMD models to make my own renders.
