Rocky entered the gym battle field expecting another state of the art room like the one he had encountered in viridian city. He was rather diappointed. The whole place looked like a crumbling ruin. The actual battle floor was kept in pristine condition, but the area around was strewn with rubble and the building looked like it was crumbling around him.

The Gymleader stepped forward. "Hi, I'm brock. Welcome to the Pewter gym!"

Rocky looked at the gym leader. "Hello, my name is Rocky, I have come to challenge your gym Will you accept my challenge?"

Brock laughed, "oh you are so formal. Yes, yes. I accept lets see what you have got. Geodude, Onix I choose you!"

The Geodude didn't really present much of a threat but the sheer size of the Onix made Rocky doubt his choices. He called out Kick-Puncher and Speedy. "Kick-Puncher use your fighting moves and you can defeat these rock Pokemon easily. Speedy, there is a lot of loose rubble lying around, go and find yourself a nice hard stone, that might give you a chance."

He then called out his other three Pokemon. "You three watch. This is valuable experience."

Speedy went zooming through the rubble and throwing little pieces of debris in his wake as he tried different stones and threw them aside, searching for the perfect weapon.

Brock called out, "Are we doing this or not? I'm sending in Geodude."

Rocky sent in Kick-Puncher. "Remember, Focus your anger into a cold fury and then use one attack to finish it!" Rocky said to the Geodude. He heard an excited, "Rattata" from speedy and he turned to see the little rat emerge from a pile of rubble with a strange blue crystal.

The battle began, Kick-puncher stood still and focused his anger. Geodude took advantage of Kick-Punchers stillness to hit him a powerful tackle attack.

Meanwhile Speedy zoomed around the other side of the arena to where Onix was waiting. The huge Onix looked down at the tiny Rattata and laughed at the tiny Pokemon. Speedy climbed up on a boulder and tried to intimidate the the Onix. This made the Onix laugh even harder.

In the second round of Battle Kick-Puncher leaped into the air and delivered a one-hit KO to the geodude.

Meanwhile the staredown between Speedy and the Onix continued. Speedy showed the blue crystal he had found to the Onix. He then casually dragged the crystal along the boulder he was standing on, cutting a deep groove into it with t he strangely hard crystal. The Onix didn't seem to understand the implications of Speedy's move and still laughed at the tiny Pokemon.

Brock called Onix onto the battlefield. Kick-Puncher was excited over his victory and was giving a Mankey victory dance. "Good work Kick-Puncher. Are you strong enough to go on?" Rocky asked. The Mankey stopped its dance and looked agrily at its trainer. "Mankey! Man Man key key MANKEY!" It yelled defiantly. "OK. Sorry! I was just checking. Go get that Onix."

Kick-Puncher face down the Onix. He had the advantage and delivered a powerful punch to the giant stone snake's body. Unfortunately he just didn't have the energy left to finish the fight. Onix whipped it's body around and sent the mankey flying out of the arena to slam against the wall. Rocky checked and found the Mankey unconscious. "Well done, Kick-Puncher. Return."

"It's all up to you now Speedy. I would suggest running as fast as you can. Tire that huge thing out. Speedy looked over at Rocky with a sweet smile and shook his head. He then glared back at the Onix and dres it's finger across its throat threateningly. The Onix Once again laughed at the miniscule opponent.

The Battle began and Speedy ran straight at the Onix. The Onix contemptuously slammed his head down in a powerful headbutt attack. Speedy was thrown backwards, but the Onix threw its head back and screamed. A large diagonal groove had been cut into its forehead. Speedy jumped up and waved the blue crystal at the Onix and then ran in again.

Onix Tried to use defense curl to avoid Speedy but the little Rattata ran up the Onix's Body to score another solid hit. It now had two grooves across it's forehead forming an 'X'. The Onix gave a ferocious Roar and charged directly at Speedy. Speedy Smiled and gave his own attempt at a roar and launched himself at the giant Rock-snake.

There was a huge collision and speedy was sent flying straight toward a boulder on the edge of the arena. Rocky was sure that he had lost.

Instead of smacking into the Boulder however, Speedy got his legs under him and landed perfectly. Then he sat down with a satisfied look on his face and looked at the Onix. Rocky turned back to the Onix to see it unconscious on the battle floor. Speedy's blue crystal was stuck into the Onix's head in the middle of the 'X'. It appeared that X really did mark the spot.

After checking that Onix was was OK Brock walked over to shake Rocky's hand.

"Well done trainer. I have a lot of other battles to do today. Hopefully without quite so many tricks up their sleeve. I'll see you here later for the badge ceremony."
