An editorial retraction has to be made concerning a story about Original Base Set to be Re-release.
Several news sites including ourselves had originally reported that the original Base Set was going to be re-release in February 2016. In the rush of this news, we didn’t look into the original Japanese source for this piece of news to properly see what the product actually was. It turns out that the original Base Set isn’t going to be re-release and instead the re-release news piece was concerning another Japanese TCG product called “XY: BREAK Starter Deck”.
The “XY: BREAK Starter Deck” will contain a pack with 60 cards, a player’s manual and a coin as mentioned before. Though the majority of the 60 cards will contain reprints of cards from the XY and XY BREAK blocks. There is no news of which cards will be in these packs but it looks like this starter deck is going to be used to help get players into the TCG in Japan.

With a few exceptions, the cards comprising this product are reprints from the Pokemon Card Game: XY and XY: BREAK series. (They have the same backs as the Pokemon Card Game: XY / XY: BREAK series so they can be played together.)
The set includes 1 random deck (60 cards), 32 damage counters, 2 markers, 1 coin, and an instruction book. The cards are random. Due to the nature of a constructed deck, it will contain some duplicate cards.
There is a sliver lining to this news for those hoping to see reprints of older cards. If you read the first sentence, the description mention “a few exceptions”. This could mean that we could see some cards that are not from the XY and XY BREAK block. This likne could be interpreted that some cards could be repritns from the BW era. Though, the description also mention that these cards will have the same backing as the XY/XY BREAK cards.
A little bit of Pokemon TCG history, the back of Japanese Pokemon cards from original Base Set to Darkness, and to Light… (New Destines in US) had backs that read “Pokemon Card Game” on the back. Starting with Pokemon VS (a Japanese set that wasn’t released in the US), the backs of Japanese cards were changed to have a similar look to international cards to create an universal identity.
With that said, if the description mention that all the cards from XY: BREAK Starter Deck will have the current TCG backing and that there will be “exceptions”. Perhaps we may see some cards from Base Set being reprinted. There is no official word on this and it is only speculation but it is something for fans who want a reprint of the original Base Set can hope for. So there could be a chance for fans to get their hands on a reprint of the Base Set Charizard.
There is no word if the United States will get anything like this. The closest thing that US fans may get is something called “Generations” packs which will be release with the Mythical Pokemon Collection. There is no word about what will be in these “Generations” packs. Maybe these “few exceptions” will be released like though the Generations packs in the Mythical Pokemon Collections that are coming out in February. Starting in February, a Mythical Pokemon Collection will be release for each Mythical Pokemon starting with Mew. Each collection will come with a Mew promo, a Mew pin, a PTCGO code card and two Generations Packs. Mythical Pokemon Collection: Mew will be release on February 22nd, 2016.
