It may be one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it worked. That's why it was still in the book. He couldn't really say he was surprised to find the mage in front of him could molt his armor and create it faster than his heating, he was himself controlling multiple types of flames at once.

What he was surprised about was the cactus he suddenly ran into as he was stepping back from Castor. If his fire armor had been heat based rather than light based, it would've singed away any spikes immediately, but as it was all they did was curl slightly and jab at him as he stumbled into it. Annoyed, he burnt the cactus to a crisp and focused again on Castor.

The answer to quick molting would normally be to lower the spread of his flame and increase the heat intensity to the point where even the molting couldn't handle it, but in this fight there was too much movement for that. Instead Marx kicked at the ground, sending a sheet of heated flame through the rubble they both stood on.

Suddenly the ground underneath Castor's feat exploded, sending rubble flying again. Marx had turned their fight stage into a minefield, exploding the rubble strewn ground to throw Castor off balance, as well as throw burning rubble in his face. Marx continued his stream of intense heat though, even if it wasn't doing much now. he wanted to keep the mage on his toes.
