    And Also With You

So, having been raised Catholic, I have a slight issue with the phrase "May the Force be with You." It's nothing major or anything. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and adore the franchise, but the tag line raises a small problem for me. See, any time someone says to me "May the Force be with you," 99.9999999% of the time, the first words out of my mouth are "And Also with you." See, at the beginning of every catholic mass, we start with "May the Lord be with you" and it's replied with "And also with you." So those years of having said that over and over have caused me to robot response. It's no big deal and most people find it quite amusing, but it's one of those Things that gets me weird looks from time to time?

So, what about you? Do you have any phrases or words that trigger weird responses from you?

Actually, in Catholic Church these days, "and also with you" got replaced with "and with your spirit" among a few other things. The way they changed the Apostle's Creed threw me off during the first few weeks, but after a while I managed to remember all of the recent changes. The Our Father hasn't changed on bit, and most of the other things only had one or two words added or swapped.

A lot of people have no qualms about using God's name in vain, and I try pretty hard to avoid doing that by saying something like "oh my gosh" or "oh snap" or something like that. I know these days atheism is becoming more of thing and a lot of people don't really care anymore, but I'm still a pretty firm Christian (not too crazy though) and I make a hard effort not to do that kind of thing.

You would be correct. They did change it to "The Lord be With you" "And with your spirit" but for whatever reason that is not my immediate response to "May the force be with you". I don't know. They also changed several things like the Eucharistic consecration, etc. The reason is because it's closer to what the original Latin text said than what we have. For the most part I've got it down and can say it no issue, but for whatever reason I have to say "and also with you" whenever I hear someone blessing me with the Force.

I used to be a lot stricker with not using the lord's name in vain, but as I grew more integrated into public school, I've found myself not really holding back anymore. I still refrain from cursing, because if you can't a good argument with proper vocabulary then you shouldn't be making the argument at all, but I still find myself say "Oh my God!" or "Jesus!" sometimes. Though, for a little while I tried to switch to saying words that sounded similar but weren't the same, but I found people did not take me as seriously if I did that. I'm trying to say gosh or jeez but it's hard to step back once you've crossed that boundary.

Yeah, I try to avoid cursing like the plague. "Crap" is as high as I'll go, and I'd have to be having a REAL train-wreck of a day for me to take it higher (and I still end up feeling bad about it). I know friends that swear like sailors, and I know once you've tumbled into that habit, it's extremely hard to break. I'm even reluctant on having RP characters swear even though the moment would call for it and it falls within their character personality.

Usually when I am about to curse I start making weird noises instead that act as a sort of censor. But, as for characters cursing, eh. If it falls within their character then sure, why not? I have characters that never curse and characters that curse all the time. It's just how they are.

To be fair, in canon the polite response to "May the Force be with you" is "And also with you" or some variant, so maybe Lucas got a bit of inspiration from the Catholics?

I actually was raised Christian (Baptist, I guess) so for years (up until a few years ago) I never said the Lord's name in vain. xD Or swore that much. But now that I don't follow Christianity anymore, I do use it in vain. I try to avoid it around people who are religious though, just out of respect. My whole mother's side of the family is Christian (I have two uncles who are pastors and one of my mother's cousins is also a pastor) so I don't do it in front of them (or curse, of course). I still say "oh my goodness" or "oh my gosh" out of habit, and sometimes that little voice in the back of my head still tells me that it feels cleaner that way. XD When I get angry though, that's when I don't care as much. lel. THANKS, EMOTION.

I actually have a huge issue with "ta." As in, a replacement for "thank you" usually said to small children (for some reason). I always say "no worries" in response to a "thank you" so when someone says "ta" it feels like less of a "thank you" and more of an acknowledgement or something. Meaning that I don't think "no worries" fits it, so I always just stare at people in response instead. Maybe give a nod, you know. I've gotten into saying "na" as a humorous "no worries" equivalent to "ta" as a "thank you" abbreviation though. XD Also when my dad will say thanks in a different language (he doesn't speak any other language fluently; he just does it because yolo), I don't know how to say "no worries" in the same language...so again, I just stare. XD

I...have never thought of that. But that should definitely be my response from now on.
