Okay so my name is Bethan. It's pronounced BETH-an with emphasis on the "beth". It's exactly like Bethany but without the y. I always thought that was obvious, but APPARENTLY NOT. These are the occasions that stick out to me:
- I have a lot of people read my name incorrectly and call me Bethany. Okay, that's fine, no worries. I'll just correct you and we'll move on. However, one teacher at school called me Bethany for the entire 7 years she taught me, regardless of how often I corrected her.
- Beth-ANNE, with emphasis on the "an" sound. It sounds weird and disconnected.
- At school, I had a substitute teacher call me Beef-an. This lead to the nickname Beef Man throughout my entire high school career, which people thought was hilarious since I don't eat meat.
- Yet another teacher called me Bay-than, so my friend started calling me Baethan from that point on (which is actually kinda funny)
At this point, I've given up and tell people to call me Beth. My surname is even worse though. Iley - I've heard ee-lee, ill-ee, uh-lee, il-ay, ee-lay. It's actually eye-lee!
