Looking back at the discussion about Comic Sans, I looked up commentaries throughout the Internet bashing Comic Sans, and found out about another font people hate(d): Souvenir.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souvenir_(typeface)
This font was apparently overused back in the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s. People have even called it the Comic Sans of the 1970s due to it being used everywhere. I even had some special education pamphlets from when I was in Head Start that were printed in Souvenir. However, I actually think Souvenir looks somewhat more professional than Comic Sans-but, there's that old saying: "Remember, friends don't let friends set Souvenir."
*Dislcaimer: I set the Font tag for this post to use some of the Souvenir variants that I know about, and will appear in one of them if you have any of them on your computer, but I know most of you probably don't, which is why I linked above to Wikipedia for an example.
If I had to pick, I'd say century gothic. I had to use that all sophomore year instead of TNR on my papers and it drove me nuts.
Given the link, I think Souvenir looks very attractive and pretty. It's relatively professional, too.
I think any time a font is widely used / popular, people grow to hate it because they literally see it everywhere. Unless it's Arial. I mean, how can Arial bug you? :P It's everywhere, and it's probably one of the most neutral typefaces ever. I can see how it would get old, but similarly I haven't seen anyone that legit hates it. xD
there's a reason people dislike comic sans, though. in an effort to be whimsical and full of character, people end up making themselves seem juvenile. that is, unless you're me.![]()

Oh, that explains why I see that font being used on stuff printed in that period of time. It's not as hideous unpleasant to the eye unlike Times New Roman or Comic Sans MS, but I can see why perhaps overexposure to such blandness might prove unnerving.
I dislike Arial. Greatly. Pisses me off whenever academic papers insist on having me use it. "Arial, 12" urgh. People should scrap Arial as the default and use Calibri instead. Or Tahoma. Or Verdana.
