Um, I don't know. xD I mean, we're not a culture. We're just regular people. xD I hang out with my female friends and my male friends equally. In fact, when I'm just with my girlfriend, I think most people assume we're just friends. xD I mean, girls can get away with a whole lot more than guys can. We can giggle and hug and stand within a close vicinity and people think it's a normal friendship. But if guys do that, then there's no question, ya know? xD I just do whatever. I mean, people make assumptions that my brother and I are together (ew) if we are with one another so it goes both ways.
I get what you mean, but this happens waaaaaaaaaay more if there's a girl hanging out with a guy. Considering heterosexual relationships are much more common, I think that it's far more common for someone to assume that two friends of the opposite gender are romantically involved than two friends of the same gender. I mean, heck, I have a close male friend who I've known for six/seven years, and his FAMILY thought we were dating... xD Simply because I was a female friend. It wasn't until about a year ago that that was cleared up, haha.
No-one wants to leave the house? xD Come on. That's taking it a bit far. Even if there were assumptions that you were romantically involved with the person you go out with (female or male), that's not a reason to stay at home. I don't care who thinks I'm with who! xD It's their problem, not mine.
