Crossroads Comics #99-Genesis: A Gijinka Story

It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for Crossroads Comics!

This week we’ll be talking about Genesis: A Gijinka Story. I’ve reviewed this comic in the past, in Crossroads Comics #16 way back in 2017; however, I made some mistakes while analyzing and talking about the comic that the original review has always somewhat bothered me. So I felt, on the eve of our 100th entry, it was time to right those wrongs and give this comic a more proper analysis.

Genesis: A Gijinka Story follows M2-K, a in perfect Mewtwo clone that was born without several fully developed limbs. As a result, he is experimented upon in order to test the capabilities of prosthesis and Mewtwo clones. He has a tense relationship with the labs and as his power grows, so do the pains he experiences from his implants and growing psychic abilities. However, after a test goes wrong and the lab is attacked, M2-K is thrust into the real world where he must hide in order to survive and not risk returning to the labs for further testing.

Genesis: A Gijinka Story is a very creative and unique story. While it is loosely based on the author playthrough of Pokémon Y as evidence by the mentions of Mega Evolution and Kalosian lore in some of the extras, the story is much more than a retelling of Pokémon Y. It is a story about M2-K, a clone who is trying to find an identity of his own and then helps others like him as find their own identities. It is also a story about his struggle to survive and how he is constantly reminded that his power and abilities make him an outcast to society. And when he is faced with losing himself and his friends to evil actors looking to use their powers for personal gain? Only time will tell.

Since I last reviewed this comic three years ago, the story has really developed and grown. It has taken a much different path than I would have expected at the time when I first reviewed it. However, this has made the story a much more interesting read as the author, DasUnicorm, is able to keep readers on their toes about what will happen next and where M2-K’s journey will lead in the future.

Genesis: A Gijinka story can be found on Tapas, Tumblr, and Deviantart. You can also support the author on Patreon and Ko-fi.
