Why Detective Pikachu for Live Action Movie?

Detective Pikachu
The question that everybody wants an answer to!

During Worlds 2018 we saw the official Detective Pikachu logo and important people involved with the movie. Though, IGN got an up close and personal talk with director, Rob Letterman, about the movie. During this interview it was reveal why they decided on a movie about Detective Pikachu instead of Ash Ketchum.

Below is an insert from the interview concerning this topic.

“The Pokemon Company, they’ve already made many, many movies of Ash, and they came to Legendary with this idea of using a new character. So when I came onboard, I was pitched this character of Detective Pikachu, and I fell in love with the story behind it. It’s a really great story. It was something with a lot of heart, and it was just very unique. And because there’s already been so much work done with Ash, for the first live-action movie I thought it was a really good idea to try something new with a new character, but bake it into the universe of Pokemon. So it still follows all the rules, and we get to see a lot of our favorite things.”

Based on this, it sounds like it was The Pokemon Company idea to use Detective Pikachu over Ash. It sounds like a good idea. After all, Detective Pikachu lacks twenty years of background compare to Ash. The small Pikachu character is a new character who viewers can learn about. If they want to learn more about Detective Pikachu then they can always pick up the game named after him.

During the weekend, Letterman also stated that the Pokemon in Detective Pikachu would look realistic. Earlier in the year we saw a preview of how Pokemon could look like from posters on set.
