And yeah, that's probably true. The northeast is such a sleepy place. Our idea of a party is just having a bunch of people over for drinks and a conversation.
True. If I could find one.

No that's not what I meant. Northern sororities and fraternities are HUGE party locations. That's all they do. It's literally the stereotype you see in movies. In the south, it's more service oriented and while there are parties it's not as much.

Groups of immature boys doing what you'd expect groups of immature boys to do? xD I have no idea what the point of them is either!

Same. I'm not even sure how they became a thing and why colleges are okay with them screwing around. I think they hurt more than help when it comes to academics.

I washed a documentary about them once. It had a negative spin because it was about hazing and how some kids had been killed during it and the fraternities hasn't been punished at all. Anyway, they said that colleges turn a blind eye to it because most of their donations come from alumni who were heavily involved in fraternities and may even still be involved somehow. Pretty lame. :/

So my frat history is a bit rusty but if I remember correctly Phi Beta Kappa was the first frat and it was actually started as an academic scholars group of sorts. How the transition happened I can't really remember but nevertheless, Sarah's not entirely wrong, but you have to know there's a difference between Greek Life in the north and in the south. In the north the frats and sororities are way more likely to get away with stuff. But here? No way. Hazing is actually banned on our campus and on most southern campuses. Doesn't prevent it from happening but if they're caught they can lose recruiting rights, booster rights, and funding for a certain amount of years. How do I know? Like two years ago there was a hazing incident on my campus that resulted in a guy drowning. The fraternity has been banned from hosting or participating in pretty much all events, they have almost no funding right now, and they haven't been able to recruit since the incident. There's rumors that they've done some "black market recruiting" which is just under the table recruiting that's against the rules but is really hard to catch.

So yeah, the south cracks down on stuff and we aren't even the most strict university. Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia are all pretty hardcore too.

Oh yeah, I've heard of similar hazing incidents. Hazing just seems like one of the stupidest things ever and only gets people in trouble with the cops, hurt, or as you mentioned, dead. I mean making someone do something silly and humiliating isn't all that bad if there's no risk of them getting physically hurt or harmed by it just to "prove their loyalty" to the frat, but when it involves something illegal, risky, or just outright dangerous, that's definitely going way too far.

But yeah, throughout all the years I was at Seton Hall, I never saw or heard of any hazing incidents, so either they were very low-key or they just plain didn't happen. But then again, Seton Hall is mainly a small, Catholic university, so it's probably not the best example to use for this.

Yeah I mean the hazing incident was really kind of stupid too. Supposedly the frat had all the pledges take a predawn run as part of their hazing. I'd like to point out that not only is hazing illegal on clemson's campus but predawn runs were banned as hazing rituals by the national frat. The kid who died was instructed to bring McDonalds for 30 people but he didn't and then a confrontation happened and he got thrown into the lake, was knocked unconscious from the impact, and drowned.

Geez, that's terrible. I seriously hope they found the guy who did that and nailed them with the full on murder charge. What a stupid reason to do that to someone. :c

But yeah, I never got mixed up with that stuff. The only organizations I belonged to were things like the Finance Club, Economics Club, and the Dean's Advisory Committee. And even in those clubs, you can still have fun and it was up to us to decide how much and how often we wanted to contribute. I did a few activities here and there, but nothing too crazy as I was mainly focused on classes and other things on the side.
