So do these colors indicate superior and inferior ranks or is it just people are more special now? I never really watched DBZ but years ago a friend I once had tried to vaguely explain there are different SSJ ranks or something. Lots of auras and hair changes.

Colours are mostly related to how powerful a character is. Although two characters being at the same "saiyan level" (that is, same hair colour) doesn't mean they're equally strong.

Also at the very start of Dragon Ball Z they went all on about power levels. Now....they mean absolutely nothing. They can feel their power level (excluding Gods), but they don't analyze it as they once did.

I think I watched a few episodes of Dragon Ball a long time ago.

Pretty much xD and yeah some people just don't like the suspense or time it takes. If there's anything I learned from this latest season of Dragon Ball Super. It's each episode (unless they time skip) lasts one minute of time in their own. So all that screaming they do takes a second or 2 in theirs xD.
