Palila raised an eyebrow at Amy, who somehow participated in the conversation with Tony while completely ignoring her- and was spouting some terribly cliche buzzwords about friendship and teamwork. Tony's explanation did make sense though, about his own family.
You've only known this guy what, a few days? You can't sincerely be sure of anything about him yet... She mused internally, watching Amy pat Tony on the back, then offer a frightened pokemon towards another trainer to pet. She grimaced a little, but the expression was not noticed by anyone (thankfully) as a shiny growlithe burst forth from the bushes, and then a flustered trainer appeared too.

After she explained herself, Palila turned back towards Nathan.
"Oh, uh, you are Nathan, then?" She asked, hypothetically, since they hadn't been introduced but he had already been referenced by Sophie. "I can't say that I'm gonna stick together in one big gang with everyone here all the time, but like, c'mon man, whether I like it or not I'm now one of this motley crew of wormhole-homeless kids. And some of them seem hopelessly naive! I'm not just gonna scram." She tried to reassure him in her own way.

Now that the other crowds of small capturable pokemon were gone, nearly all the trainers turned their attention to the growlithe chase in some way.
So far there was a Staravia, Shinx, Grotle and Chimchar giving chase, as well as another Chimchar and Starly making some sort of enticing food-ambush. It smelled delicious, and Palila was glad she'd just eaten. She chuckled and watched the long grass shake as the pokemon ran in and out of the trees at various speeds a little bit like a scooby-doo cartoon. It reminded her of her little brothers, and she dug around in her jacket for the two pokeballs she already had.
Upon opening both Pokeballs, it appeared that Starly was asleep.
"Wha?" Palila quickly put the Starly back into its pokeball, embarassed. Maybe throwing a pokeball that hard really HAD knocked the pokemon out!
"Well, do you want to play tag, at least?" She offered the bewildered Rowlett that was awake, and it sedately cheeped, taking flight and joining in, flying along behind the crowd of pokemon but not overtaking anyone.

"Hey Shiny trainer chicka! Wanna come over here away from the long grass? Without your pokemon, you're shark bait right now- plus theres a bit of a stampede." Palila waved down the mysterious stranger- still with an ear towards Nathan, in case he had anything more to say.

While the growlithe trainer never interacted with Palila directly and recaptured her pokemon with a quick thanks, another boy with mud in his hair emerged from the forest and seemed keen on doing a round of handshakes. She was confused as to why these kids were so formal, and didn't extend her hand to shake. That was something old people did! She waved at the growlithe trainer, as if to say 'no problem'.

When Matthias babbled to the newcomer about the portals, and then became sidetracked by his pokemon hatching, she wanted to roll her eyes. Maybe his pokemon were smarter than he was! They all worked together to get an egg hatched, and all changed form at the same time.
"I can't say sunbeam is the brightest tool in the shed, but his pokemon are pretty on point." she remarked to Nathan as he handed her the pokemon selector.
"Piplup seems good." She told him, selecting the little bird pokemon. "I think it'll fit in."

Palila stepped back from the group for a second to have a look at the bundle of stuff she was just given. A sketchpad, cool. A journal, less cool. A pokedex? Strictly necessary. Some wierd other Poke-device? Eh, whatever. It would go straight to the bottom of her backpack.
"Oh, pokeballs! Cool!" She put those most useful things in the front pocket of her hoodie.

All this time, her Rowlett had been flying around- soaring up and down in the sky, weaving in and out of trees, and finally once the growlithe was once again caught, it was just doing tricks and flips in the general area playing with leaves. Its wings looked wide and stronger somehow for all the flight training it was doing.

"You really enjoy being out once in a while, don't you!" Palila remarked to her Rowlett, a small smile on her face.
"Well, before you go back into your ball, I've got a new member of the gang for us to meet." She threw her just-claimed pokeball out onto the ground and out popped Piplup. It sat very still.
Rowlett flew down to investigate, and gave Piplup an exploratory light peck on the head.
"Pip!" Piplup whipped around towards the Rowlett, flicking its wings in annoyance and going for a counterattacking peck.
"Lett!" Rowlett was pecked in the eye, and flung a wing accross, knocking Piplup over. Piplups small body rolled and was immediately upright again, and she jetted a small amount of water at Rowlett in retaliation.
"Oy! No knocking each other out." Palila interjected, and they both turned to her briefly before continuing the sparring match.

Palila was once again reminded of her siblings, and just sat there watching with a reminiscent smile, letting them go at it for a minute or two. Nobody looked terribly hurt, but they were honing their skills. Rowlett was wise enough to not use any grass type moves or seriously injure Piplup, who most certainly didn't have the advantage in their tussle.

((I wasn't sure of the exact form for training, but I hope this'll do! Link to stats in header))

While other peoples Pokemon seemed to be evolving, Palila's pokemon just seemed to get stronger in their own forms, and more used to their little bird bodies.
"Right, thats enough." She took a motherly tone with them, putting a foot inbetween to kick them gently apart.
"This has been fun, but you're gonna go to your rooms and next time you two come out we are gonna work as a team, ok?" She told them off lightly, returning them both to their pokeballs.

She tuned in just as the newest addition to the group finished talking.
"...Two portals?" She echoed him curiously, wondering if someone else had come through just before she did.

Palila nodded as the shiny mudbray was shown, and then again as the newcomer described the portal that had spat her out onto the grass.
"Oh, you've heard of portals before. Well, cool I guess." She couldn't really add much to the conversation, but she was listening and interested. So this guy got here naturally, and he knew who the president of Kalos was, or something. It was comforting to know that someone had employed science to figure out portal business in the past- rather than just relying on kids to run around.

While Amy had a battle and Drake took a break from talking, Palila rolled her eyes and looked away. Being in such a large group of people was fine and all, but she felt like there wasn't quite enough space for everyone to do their own thing without crashing into each other. She wondered if it was like a skate park, or a wave, where everyone had to take it in turns.
She mused on this and wandered slightly away into the grass, tripping over a Bidoof!
"Argh!" She tumbled, rolling and avoiding injury- though ending up with grass all over her jeans.
"What the heck, man! Couldn't you hear a crew coming through? Scram!" She shouted at it, releasing Rowlett from its pokeball.

"Rowlet! Use Razorleaf!" She growled, and her pokemon sprung into action.

    Opponent: Bidoof
    Attacker: Rowlett
    Opponent's HP: 5
    Attacker's HP: 16
    Bonus: (-7)
    Opponent's remaining points : 0
    Attacker's remaining HP: 11

It was over in a moment, as Rowlet seemed to have some pent up anger left over from the sparring match with Piplup. He had acted carelessly though, and taken a bite to the wing.
"Hm. Thats no good. Lets see if that Joy kid can do anything about this." Palila was frowning, but put a hand on Rowlets head.
    "Return."

Rejoining the group, Palila was just in time to hear most of Drakes monologue.
"Sure, Drakeo. You defs are rambling, but its chill." She was surprised he was so happy to talk about news reports and politics- most people she knew weren't so chatty about those topics, back at home.
"You wanna have a turn rambling about politics and news headlines, Miss rissole?" Palila turned to Amy with a grin, having picked up some of her name when she introduced herself to Drake.

Palila grinned as Amy turned to her, and tilted her head slightly. Being flicked in the forehead was no bother. It was kinda endearing, actually. It reminded her of the skaters back at home.
"Only nicknames from your girlfriend?" She echoed, and looked over at the only other girl in the group that she knew. "Is Sophie-trophy your girlfriend?"
Palila didn't really care about the answer, ducked away from Amy a little.
"Sure buddy, you can be called Wolfgang!" She saluted Drake.
With one hand inside her pocket, she nervously held onto one of her pokeballs, and noticed a movement over Amy's shoulder at the back of the group.
"Oh! Hey! Joy boy! Can you help me out with this Starly? I think I clocked it one when I chucked the ball at it." She held out the pokeball which held the tiny Starly, in case he wanted to inspect it.

Palila was also approached by another person. When the girl finally stopped talking, she echoed the name back to make sure she got it right.
"Neith. Like knees, but with a lisp? Neeth?" She gave the girl a big smile, deciding to reply back with just as much gusto.
"Call me Rae! I'm a Alola-roller! The bird's a Rowlet, and hey ohmygosh cool beads!" She reached out to touch the beads hanging from the front of Neith's hair, but stopped as she was confronted by Sophie.

Palila took a step back, confused. So far, everyone had been acting like normal groups would- some disagreements, some friendliness, some weirdos. She hadn't seen any problem with it, and was a little taken aback by being confronted like this.
Then, it all clicked as she listened to what Sophie actually said.
Palila looked down at the blonde girl, slightly out of arms reach, letting her finish her rant.
"What are you, 14? What if I don't want to be on YOUR team? Who do you think you are, my mum?" She laughed openly, disrespect and disbelief on her face.
"You can't tell me what to do, ya spicy little sitrus! But, does using swearwords make you feel big and important?" She poked out her tongue and then made a bolt ahead on the path towards the town. Having longer legs that were used to doing a lot of exercise, she wondered if she could stay ahead of Sophie.
"The only sticking I have to do with you is telling you to stick it!" She flipped the bird over her shoulder, feet pounding along the ground.
What an interesting day it had been so far!

Palila had run ahead of the group for a while, and when she looked back over her shoulder, she noticed that neither the girl who called herself the leader of the group, nor the one who had flicked her in the face had taken off after her.
"Pfft." She rolled her eyes slowed down a little, back down at a stroll by the time that someone caught up with her.

"Oh, hey Matt." She gave him a nod, but kept more than an arms length away. So far most people seemed to have an agenda of telling her what to do and swearing at her or getting physical when she didn't comply.
"Nah, I don't know anything about raising baby pokemon." She shrugged at him. "Pokemon training isn't really my thing- My family doesn't do anything special. I'm not trying to be a nutritionist, I'm not in the Joy family, I'm not the daughter of a cop or whatever. I'm sure someone back there knows more." She waved a hand back towards the group, somewhat dismissively.
"It seems like everyone who went through portals so far is so /special/. You've probably got some interesting history too, or some grand life goal. I don't. I'm just here." She opened up the conversation in case Matthias wanted to talk about himself to fill in the time.
Still, whether or not he decided to chat with her as they finished walking to the city, Palila was glad for the company.

    -------------------------------------

When they arrived at the Pokemon Centre, Palila immediately went to the counter for assistance. She rolled two of her pokeballs accross the benchtop to the always-slightly-familiar staff member working there, and had her whole team healed up nice and quickly. No fuss there. At least the Pokecentres in this universe worked in the same way!
When it came to scanning trainer cards in order to stay the night, Palila was baffled.
She did /have/ a trainer card already, since she had begun her journey in Alola by the time she was sucked into the portal. It just... didn't work.
    She scanned it again.
    Trainer not found
Palila threw her head back in exasperation and wandered to the corner of the room while everyone else scanned in, taking out her sketchpad and doodling some grafitti style art. Sophies announcement about an 11pm curfew stuck in her mind easily, and she wondered how cold this land actually got overnight. Probably pretty cold.

"Kay, I'm off to find warmer threads, dudes." She spoke after Sophie, and headed out the door into town.
Hopefully some clothing shops were still open, and some places that sold berries or potions (or spraypaint) for cheap.

Palila peered around at all the market stalls, very pleased with the atmosphere and their wares. As it was getting dark, she supposed that these must be some sort of nightmarkets the city had. She fiddled with the pokeballs inside her hoodie and decided not to let Rowlet or Piplup out, but to meet that Starly she had caught earlier.
With a little spark of the pokeball, Starly came out. It looked up at Palila for a second, then down at the pavement, where there were a few breadcrumbs. It chirruped happily.
"Yeah, I like markets too." Palila gave it a grin, before being attracted by two stalls nearby.
One of the stallholders was calling her a child and beckoning her over, the other just seemed to be doing the regular storeholder thing and talking up their own goods.
She wandered over to the old woman with a grin.
"Child? I guess everyone is a child compared to you, huh grandma?"

Palila laughed at the old womans sarcasm, glad to see that a silly remark didn't deter her.
"A great opportunity, huh." She raised an eyebrow as the woman explained herself.

"Look, I gotta be honest with ya- I don't know where the heck I am, and I don't know where Eterna City is." Palila explained with a sigh, and then shrugged.
"But, if your wingulls are so well trained, it probably won't matter if I take them the wrong direction- I'll figure out where Eterna City is eventually, and they will have had more time to explore. You won't die in the next few weeks, right, Gemstone Gran?" She half joked and poked fun at her age again, but was half serious. Palilas mother was always making her do helpful things for the elderly people that lived nearby, so despite her sass, she was inclined to help.
    "I'll do it."

    Pokémon trying to catch: Wingull
    Pokémon using: ---
    Point Requirement: 7
    Item Being Used/Quantity: 1xPokeball

    Points After: 32

The elderly lady took an empty pokeball from Palila and pressed it against a wingull that was roosting in the stall, then waved down another wingull that was slightly larger. It seemed like that was the one she was going to lead, and the one in the Pokeball was to keep.
Palila nodded to the lady and gave her a wave before being startled by the sounds of a scuffle nearby.

Her Starly was fighting a Ratatta over a crumb near some nice ceramic pots, and the two of them had bumped into one and knocked it over. It fell with a clatter and Palila rushed over, bringing out a Pokeball.
"Starly, return!" She zapped it back into safety and ran away from the scene, noting that Starlys stats had changed slightly. Maybe someone had left rare candy crumbs on the ground!

    Pokémon being Leveled Up: Starly
    Levels: 5 --> 13 (8 levels)
    Points required: 16
    Points on hand: 32
    Points remaining: 16

Either way, it was getting pretty late, and Palila did NOT want to be stuck outside in the cold all night. She didn't stop at the shops or buy anything else on her way back to the Pokecentre in her haste, and regretted that she still didn't have any warmer clothes.

Palila stepped back into the Pokecentre main hall, feeling like the first one back (although maybe she wasn't).
She took a seat on a comfy chair at the back of the room and pulled her hoodie up over her head, leaning back and looking up at the ceiling. It was going to be a long night sleeping in a chair like this, but at least the foyer was warm.
    Being homeless sucks.
