Ech. I'm gonna miss those gradients, they're that one subtle factor that made my avatar look nice. In fact, just to get an idea of the rules, would my avatar, ignoring the gradients, be within the rules? It's not the submission, obviously, but I just need to get an idea of what's allowed and what isn't for the medium.

Yeah, it should be, as long as the shading is done by you completely without the use of gradients and editing. I wouldn't have any issue with accepting something like your avi without the gradients. :)
