Yeah, my elementary school science classroom had a few animals, also. I remember they had a guinea pig and two gerbils, but I can't remember if they had anything else.
Some pets can be a lot of fun, but some are kind of boring. Hermit crabs, for example, really don't do all that much. I kind of like the furry critters a bit more.
Pets are pretty fun to have, but some are a big handful. Like my dog is mostly calm, but if she wants attention she'll get that attention by yipping or pressing her muzzle against us or jumping up and down and getting up and down . It's ridiculous but so adorable xD.

Yeah, I don't think I could handle dogs. They can be awesome companions, but they demand a lot of time and attention. I'm thinking more along the lines of guinea pigs and/or rabbits. They're generally quiet but can be fun, cute, and playful.

Yeah, my family has had hamsters and with them came some not so great experiences. I don't think I'd want to take another gamble with them again.
Cats seem like a mixed bag. I've heard good things and bad things, so I guess it comes down to the pet's individual personality.
It really depends on personality if you're going for a pet - mostly a cat. xD Our cats (up until they disappeared) didn't really require much attention because they stayed outside, but came in during the day. All we had to do was feed 'em.
My rabbit, however. Oh, he was the most mischievous cretin I have ever known. XD
