Name: Jack Alexander DeHanes (endearingly called Jackson on occasion)
Age: 28
Side: Independent
Rank: Unwilling comrade of Taire, his partner in crime. Not that they don't commit crimes though...
Gender: Male
Appearance
"You do like wearing impractical clothes sometimes..."
"You can't complain, these are pretty comfortable."
At first glance, Jack seens rather average, weighing in on the light side and standing tall at 5"7. While he may not seem like the type, Jack has somewhat toned muscles from getting into small scrapes and fights with the two warring sides over the years. Also as a result of these scrapes, his hands are noticably paler and leathery due to the numerous scars and cuts incurred, along with a broken-and-healed-wrong nose. Not much a guy can do while far away from a decent medical facilities these days. Since he's always on the move between towns, Jack is slightly sunburnt where he isn't tan. As for other details, most folks don't get a glimpse of Jack's eyes, or any other defining facial features on account of the yellow-tinted glasses or goggles he wears. For the record, Jack's eyes are plain brown, and his face seems to be contorted into a perpetual state of annoyance. It's rare to see him flash a genuine smile, though he has taken to laughing sarcastically the majority of the time. His hair is dark brown with the odd teal highlight running through it, and definitely messy. It also tends to stick up in the front and is pulled back into a short ponytail. Yes, he does cut it sometimes, but those times are far and few in between and usually involves haphazard snipping with a knife.
And clothes! Despite the relatively acrid climate of Orre, Jack feels at home when wearing a green sweatshirt under a rather plain, gray jacket. It does have the effect of making him look bulkier than he really is since the sweatshirt doesn't quite fit well enough with the sleeves of the jacket. The hood also hangs out since the jacket has a somewhat high collar (usually flattened down around his shoulder) but no hood. In most cases, especially when traveling, Jack wears the hood to protect himself from the weather. Though when he does go into town, he leaves it down since it does make him stick out more and seem suspicious. Well yeah, the weather is pretty warm, though for some reason, Jack doesn't seem to be affected by the temperatures. He has claimed multiple times that he prefers cold weather over warm sunny days however. Jack also prefers jeans, especially those of the tough variety. Since he doesn't get a lot of time to shop, the pairs he does have are usually dusty from the Orre soil and worn out around the seams. Footwear, there's not much variety considering Jack's lifestyle, and he has opted for a hardy pair of hiking boots, dark gray and leathery from years of use. While Jack does have a nice pair of gloves for protection, that stuff is usually just in his backpack.
As for other stuff that can be seen on his person, Jack wears a silver watch on his left hand (he's ambidextrous, though he does seem to favor his left hand). There is also the aforementioned glasses and goggles, worn most of the time. The glasses are for a day out in town, while goggles would be more for traveling between towns to protect the eyes from the sun and dust storms that occasionally whirl about the place. And of course he needs places to put some of his important stuff too! His jacket has a few pockets - two obvious ones on the outside, but a few concealed in the inner lining of the jacket. This is where he keeps his spare cash and a cell phone for emergencies. His jeans do have pockets; those go unused as it's easy for things to fall out of there. The majority of his stuff (rations, water, notebooks (for keeping tabs on the situation in Orre)) are stowed away in a light black backpack. Also right on top of everything is two bars of steel alloy which is used for... stuff. They weigh approximately 50kg combined (110lbs). You'll see what he uses those for later on. Before I forget, the Pokeballs are usually in one of his jacket pockets, though most of the time his Pokemon are outside of their balls. Other than that, there really isn't much else to comment on other than the fact that Jack owns a well-maintained motorcycle that somehow survived everything from explosions to running away from everything.
Personality
Pretty easy to sum up Jack in a few words; nothing fazes him. It is rather hard to get him to flinch or bat an eye at anything, and on top of it, his default expression is that of perpetual annoyance. Even close friends and family have not actually figured out what Jack is always annoyed at, and have come to the conclusion that it is everything out there. Also, the fact that Jack barely comments on anything have misled people to believe that he is soft-spoken or quiet or antisocial. Which suits him just fine, as he isn't one for making small talk. This seems to stem from the fact that he dislikes inadvertently provoking people into fighting him. With his aloof attitude and constant aura of annoyance, Jack has ended up in fights and will still end up in fights anyways. However, just because he doesn't make small talk doesn't mean he can't carry a conversation. He just would rather be thinking about something else more important or discussing the ramifications of the numerous skirmishes scattered throughout the Orre region.
If someone ever gets him talking for an extended period of time, they'll find out quickly that Jack is well-read and does know a large chunk of information on a variety of subjects. It does seem like he knows a lot about molecular chemistry and other major sciences such as physics and biology in particular. On the subject of information and knowledge in general, he is meticulous in dealing with information (those notebooks in his backpacks are there for a reason), despite not being a Thinker of some kind, causing him to be quite good at reading people and how situations may turn out. However, this only applies when he actually has prior knowledge, so if Jack is thrown into a situation without any reading on what is happening, he tends to hesitate while he calculates his best options. To his credit, even without figuring out the best options, Jack takes up the initiative and charges into battle a lot. This lets him get the jump on most people as they aren't expecting a full frontal charge like what he does.
Additionally, while Jack may be annoyed most of the time, he has relatively thick skin. It takes a massive amount of goading, back-talk, and insults to get him to boil over with anger, and even then, that anger may pass relatively quickly. On the other end of the spectrum, it takes a lot of effort to make him smile, though less to make him laugh. He doesn't hold grudges - it's not in his nature to do so. However, he does remember people, and will judge them based on their actions and words. If a person does get on his good side, the one thing he will do for sure is to back that person up, no matter what happens. Just don't mess with his friends or family. It won't end well. It's also wise to keep in mind that Jack acts in his self-interest the majority of the time when making decisions.
On the subject of morals, considering the powers he ended up with, Jack abhors killing. For safety's sake, he will not hesitate to fight but will definitely stop short of killing. A manipulative person could twist this to their advantage, but if pushed far enough over the edge at all, morals definitely will go out of the window.
History
As far as people go, Jack has had a relatively peaceful life. He hails from the underground city of the Under, which as far as anyone is concerned, doesn't exist anymore. But considering that it was only recently demolished, Jack has spent the majority of his childhood between the Under and Pyrite Town, mainly because his school was in Pyrite. Pyrite's education system could've been better, but Jack spent most of his spare time reading when he wasn't running with the gangs in the Under. He does have some faint connections to the Kids Grid, having ran errands for them during the events of Pokemon Colosseum. But other than that, he largely stayed out of much of those events because of concern from his parents and the fact that his brother was terrible at sticking up for himself in fights at school. When Jack was around 11, his family moved up to Pyrite Town due to the Under being filled in and the fact that no one really wanted to be crushed by rocks at all. Not much changed for Jack in ways of lifestyle, except that he entered high school a few years after that. High school sucked, and Jack just kept to himself at that point. He was happy to graduate and worked as a messenger slash mail-person between towns. Sure he could've gotten into a college outside of Orre, and would have excelled there if it wasn't for the fact that his parents was getting old and had to be cared for. As a result, Jack was the one who stayed behind while his brother headed out to the Sinnoh region to major in the field of Pokemon evolution.
In any case, when the first Cluster hit Pyrite Town, it turned into literal chaos. Jack and his parents were close enough to the epicenter that it was in his own words, "hell to get out of". Since Jack was a Brute, he took the majority of hits when shuffling his parents out to Agate Town where he knew it was rather peaceful. The region was tumbling into hell, and apparently, immigration was bad in other regions. So there wasn't much of a chance to get his family out of the region. Agate Town seemed peaceful enough and it was decided that they would stay there for the time being while all this conflict blew over. And they still needed to make money, so Jack continued on his job as a messenger. He makes no distinction between jobs posted by the Cipher or the Lab organizations, and has a reputation for being very tight-lipped about everything, allowing him to at least run minor messages and briefs alongside the bulk that are collected from regular people scattered around Orre. The fact that everyone's letters are mixed up lends to a sense of concealment, and Jack is honorable enough that he wouldn't peek at them.
Presently, it is around this time he met an old and rather annoying rival from his school days - Taire. It was honestly an off-chance that they ever met at all; Taire was also on the move, and seemed to be keeping tabs on the situation. As the story goes, they met, fought, somehow made up, and became thick as thieves afterwards. Currently, the two seems to be cooperating in the 'business' as they say.
Pokemon
[Mephistopheles] Xatu (M) - Ability: Magic Bounce
A devious Natu acquired from Jack's brother from the Sinnoh region, now evolved into an Xatu. It was a Pokemon with a rare ability, acquired from a prolific breeder at Solaceon Daycare. The Xatu was jokingly nicknamed Mephistopheles after Jack was on the receiving end of various psychic manipulations. Afterwards, they made a deal they had each other's back as long as Mephistopheles is able to roam free and enjoy the 'pleasures of life' as they say. Personality-wise, as a Psychic-type, Mephistopheles is highly intelligent, though lazy. Most of the time, Jack has to carry him around since Xatus are known to stay still as much as possible which doesn't fit Jack's lifestyle at all. It's a cause of one of the many annoyances
[Beleth] Garchomp (F) - Ability: Sand Veil
Originally a Gible, Beleth is Jack's first Pokemon. She's quite loyal to Jack and will follow him around, even to the ends of the earth. Garchomps are quite fierce - Beleth is no exception, often intimidating other Pokemon in battle before she even enters the fray. However past that, Beleth is quite adorable and cuddly, always happy to be petted or scratched under the cheek. She can seem quite air-headed in general, but this can be attributed to the fact that Beleth operates on mostly gut instinct.
Powers
Breaker (7) / Striker (5) [Recomposition - Decomposition] - Two sides of the same coin, this power basically breaks the law of the conservation of energy, though matter is a limitation. This is due to the formation and breaking of chemical bonds in order to accomplish whatever purpose he has in mind, which requires extra energy in order to do so. With its wide variety of uses, this power has led many people to believe that Jack's actual power is manipulating metal into various shapes and forms, which is his most used application for this power. One of the drawbacks to this power is that it requires a thorough and in-depth knowledge of the chemical composition of the object being affected. Because of this drawback, Jack is limited to only inanimate objects that he knows the exact composition of, such as the bars in his backpack made out of steel alloy. He can apply this to the steel bars in his backpack by manipulating them into shapes such as an emergency fix for his motorcycle, shelter, protection, weapons, and so on. He has had enough practice with doing this that it's almost natural to go for that while in a fight. Practice helps in this case and instinctively knowing where to change things, but Jack is pretty unwilling to use his power towards any sort of killing, though that doesn't include self-defense. Since decomposition is covered pretty well, recomposition on the other hand is a whole 'nother ball park. Jack has observed that it's definitely a lot harder to recompose objects into their original states, requiring the knowledge of their general structure and orientation. While it is possible, it seems unreachable at the moment when it comes to synthetic materials due to their complexity and the fact that it requires more concentration and energy to do in the first place. Can't say if he will attain that level, but it definitely seems quite far off. Both recomposition and decomposition seems to take up a significant amount of Jack's energy on use. Also, Jack is not affected if he tries using this ability on himself which eliminates the possibility of it being a Changer/Stranger ability. Biological structures are unaffected though organic compounds such as oil synthesis are fair game. So far, Jack has been able to bond hydrogen and oxygen together to create some water in an emergency, restructure walls so they are easier to break through, and whatever else the situation can call for.
Brute (2) - He can weather blows for a longer period of time than regular people. Other than that and a noticeable increase in healing from wounds, it's not much to write home about. Additionally, there hasn't been an increase to Jack's physical strength, an oddity amongst Brutes in most cases. You might've noticed that Jack is able to carry a lot of stuff on his back (steel bars weigh 50kg total, along with food and rations and stuff like that), and the answer is that even without being a Brute, Jack is still able to carry a lot in general. Bones can still break, and everyone bleeds the same anyways.
