Mewtwo is coming back to the big screen!
At the end of Pokemon: Everyone’s Story in Japan (or Power of Us in English speaking countries), a teaser was shown for the 2019 anime movie. This movie simply featured a screen Mewtwo in a test tube and the text, “Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution”. There hasn’t been much details regarding the movie.
That was until this week. It has been announced that the the 2019 Pokemon anime movie will have it’s first trailer release on New Year’s Day. On January 1st 2019, the first trailer for, the title as of right now, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.
There are not too many details about this movie’s plot at the moment. All that is known is the movie will feature Mewtwo. We do know that Takeshi Shudo is being credited as a screenwriter for the movie. Shudo passed away in 2010 but was recently credited for Pokemon: I Choose You. Perhaps this movie will take some elements from Pokemon the First Movie when it comes to Mewtwo’s backstory. This has made many Pokemon fans think that we will be getting some sort of retelling of Pokemon the First Movie and Mewtwo using the current movie canon.
What we do know is that this movie will be directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and Motohori Sakakibara. Yuyama had directed the first twenty Pokemon movies. He had passed the torch to Tetsuo Yajima. Though it seems like he has returned to direct this movie. Motohori Sakakibara is known for CG animated films such as the Snack World movie and Rudolph the Black Cat. That could mean that the 2019 could be completely CG animated. If so, this would be the first fully CG animated Pokemon movie. Though, that would be reckless speculation at this point.
Please note that the movie trailer that will be release on January 1st, 2019 may not have too many plot related details. Most of the time the first trailer that is release in December has nothing to do with the actual movie. It is simply used to get Pokemon fans hyped for the new movie with flashy images and Pokemon. This trailer is way too early to actually give any proper details or ideas if this will be a good movie. Please refer to this article on why you shouldn’t expect too much from this trailer. This trailer is early in the movie’s media cycle. They still have to fit a surprise Mythical Pokemon into the movie and a TCG set. Only then we will get a clearer picture and idea about this movie.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will be release on Friday, July 12th, 2019 in Japan. No word on when this movie will be release in the US.
