TCG Jump: Featured Card- Mewtwo EX

Mewtwo exLegendary Treasures was released a week ago and with that means several reprints of cards that we all love and loathe. Depending on who you ask, Mewtwo EX is one of them.

Mewtwo EX was one of the first cards to be printed with the return of EX Pokemon in Next Destinies. The Pokemon Company wanted to make the most powerful card and they succeeded. Psydrive is a three energy attack that allows Mewtwo EX to do one hundred twenty damage at the cost of discarding two energy. This isn’t too bad but what made Mewtwo EX famous was it’s first attack. X Ball attack uses the energy attached to both it and the opponent’s defending Pokemon to calculate the damage output.

When this card was first release, Mewtwo EX ran rampant as it was easily tech into any deck with energy acceleration. X Ball didn’t care what kind of energy was used on it. This means a Mewtwo on the bench could be sent out to attack for at least sixty damage via two Dynamotor from Eeleltrik and an attachment from the hand during the same turn it was set down. Then you need to consider how many energy was on the opponent’s defending Pokemon. The best way to counter Mewtwo EX at the time was another Mewtwo EX which led to “Mewtwo Wars” and the phrase, “I attack you for a whole bunch”.

Why isn’t Mewtwo EX seen as often anymore? Since the release of Next Destines, several other Pokemon have came to topple Mewtwo EX‘s seat at the top. Darkrai EX and his range of support was a factor along with Rayquaza EX.  These two factors made it harder for Mewtwo EX to keep up. That is only the tip of the iceberg as the Plasma mechanic introduce several new things to make things harder for Mewtwo EX to get those easy knock outs.

So why feature this old card? After this past rotation, Mewtwo EX was on the bubble to be rotated out next year. Legendary Treasures has ensure that Mewtwo EX will be around for a long time now into XY format. Mewtwo EX could be see new life with the new Mega Evolution mechanic. Mewtwo did receive two Mega Evolutions which can later be release as cards. It will be exciting to see if these Mega Evolutions can create new strategies for an old card.

If you want to use Mewtwo EX now, that is still possible. It is easily tech into any deck. If you want to attack quickly then slap a Double Colorless Energy on it. If you want to be smart then pair it up with Gardevoir‘s Psychic Mirage to double the amount of Psychic Energy on Mewtwo EX. It can be also be place in fire decks using Embour‘s Inferno Fandango. Mewtwo EX can play a similar role in decks featuring Blastoise‘s Deluge.

The possibilities are endless as long as you can get Mewtwo EX out quickly to attack.
