TCG Jump: Featured Card- Xerneas

Xerneas
We are in the middle of prereleases for the XY TCG set. This is the first set to be release since the introduction of Generation 6 and it has many new things within. Players are eagerly opening their packs in hopes for some amazing pulls ranging from Pokemon to Trainer cards. The XY set also introduces a brand new type to the card game: The Fairy type. There are some Fairy Pokemon that have some amazing abilities but the one we are going to feature is one that can be useful in many ways, Xerneas.

Xerneas is going to be release in the upcoming XY TCG expansion of February 5th. It is one of the most sought out Fairies and for good reason. Xerneas can use Geomancy for a single Fairy energy to pull two Fairy energy from the deck and place them on two benched Pokemon. Xerneas can then go on the offensive with two Fairy and a Colorless to do a hundred damage by using Rainbow Spear. This attack has the additional cost of discarding an energy from Xerneas but it will be worth it to knock out a low HP Pokemon.

When you first look at Xerneas, it doesn’t look like an impressive card. There are Pokemon who can hit harder with the same amount of energy such as Darkrai EX and Plasma Kyurem. So why consider this card over them when building decks? Xerneas can be used as Energy acceleration for the early game. A single energy attack may not mean much now after the first turn rule changes but if you can go second then this could give you an advantage in setting up bigger attackers. The downside is that Geomancy puts one energy each on two Pokemon. It would be better if it could put two energy on a single Pokemon but this isn’t the end of the metagame for the live giving Pokemon.

This is where the support Pokemon come in. The XY set introduced several new Fairy Pokemon such as Aromatisse with interesting abilities. Aromatisse’s Fairy Transfer ability allows it to move around Fairy energy to any Pokemon on your side of the board. This could be quite handy if you have a heavy attacker on the your bench such as Xerneas EX. If you moved the two Fairy energy you pulled out from little Xerneas’s Geomancy onto Xerneas EX then you are a Double Colorless Energy away from doing hundred forty damage with X Blast. A possible strategy once you have several energy on the board from Xerneas.

If you want to make things much easier then just set down the Fairy Garden stadium card. This stadium will give free retreat for  Xerneas to swap it out with Xerneas EX to fire off X Blast after X Blast.

Something to remember is that Xerneas isn’t a slouch when it comes to attacking. It can do hundred damage which is perfect to finish off weakened EX Pokemon in the late game. The best part is that if Xerneas is knocked out then it only gives up one prize. Basic Pokemon with powerful attacks are always welcomed in a metagame where EX Pokemon are running high and giving up high number of prizes.

So keep an eye out for Xerneas at your prereleases or when you are opening packs from XY. This card has a high trade value so make sure you get something big when negotiating those trades. If not, remember that this card can lead to big things when building a deck using Fairy energy.

The XY TCG set will be releases in stores on February 5th. Best of luck in your pulls!
