Weekly Article – Poké Ball-shaped Pokémon

Today’s article is going to be a short one. Here, we are going to delve into the subject of Pokémon with either the shape of a Poké Ball or have a Poké Ball pattern. For more on this subject, please read on.

There are quite a few Pokémon that have a Poké Ball shape. Voltorb and Electrode is a particularly famous example. There are also Foongus and Amoonguss. Recently, we have Vivillon with the pattern of a Poké Ball. There aren’t many Pokémon that have this shape, but the subject on why they even have patterns of a Poké Ball is an interesting one.

The idea is that Pokémon are shaped like Poké Balls in order to fool trainers into thinking they are going to collect some interesting item, but then they are thrust into a battle with them, where they could pose a danger. It would make the Poké Ball on the overworld have an element of surprise.

For Voltorb and Electrode, they might have something to do with having mutations when manufactured. Perhaps a misdirection in electricity could be the cause, based on their Electric-types. It’s kind of similar to how Dr. Frankenstein gave life to his creation. Another possibility is that Voltorb and Electrode are man-made artificial Pokémon in the same vein as Porygon and Golett, probably as a base for other synthetic Pokémon.

As for Foongus and Amoonguss, this is tricky. Considering how Poké Balls didn’t exist during Drayden’s youth, a possibility is that Foongus and Amoonguss adapted to have the pattern when Poké Balls are becoming more commonplace, whereas they might look different in the past. Or, it might just be a coincidence that they have that pattern in the first place.

Vivillon perhaps has this pattern because it is raised in the Pokémon Centre. Since Vivillon’s patterns is based on the environment it is raised in, it has something to do with with being bred in captivity to get this pattern. As such, it’s not a particularly common pattern to have.

So with that said, could there be a possibility that there are undiscovered Pokémon with Poké Ball patterns? Well, the Pokémon world is very vast, so there is a chance there might be. Since Poké Balls are a popular object, there would be Pokémon who would want to take advantage of this. One idea that I could think of is that there might be a Poké Ball-like Pokémon that has a huge mouth that is supposed to lure people, which would make for good horror material.

That’s all for today’s article. I should mention that there won’t be a weekly article next week. I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I have writing it.
