[GYM BATTLE #3] Vermilion City Gym VS Lt. Surge

    GYM BATTLE #3

Welcome to the Indigo League! Now that you have a tough team, it's time to take on the Gym Leaders of the Kanto region! Can you defeat them all and earn badges? Gyms will be open as long as the event is on, so if you can't defeat a leader yet, don't worry! Go out and catch some more Pokemon!

    How it works
The details of how to battle are found in the spoiler below. The main things to remember are:
If your Pokemon is at a higher evolution stage then it has an advantage.
If at least one of your Pokemon's type's is super effective against the opponent, then it has an advantage.
If both you and the opponent have at least one type super effective against each other, the bonus cancels out. There is no "4x" or "double" super effective.

    Spoiler:
Battling is based on only 2 things. What evolution stage your Pokemon is and its type.

    Evolution stage
For the purposes of the game, pretend no Pokemon outside of Kanto exist.

A basic Pokemon is a Pokemon that is unevolved like Bulbasaur and Pikachu.
A middle evolution is a Pokemon that has evolved once and has the potential to evolve again, like Kakuna.
A final evolution is a Pokemon that can't evolve any further like Venusaur, Seadra or Scyther.

A Pokemon can defeat any Pokemon which are at a lower evolution stage (unless one Pokemon is super effective against another!)

    Example:
Basic Pokemon vs Basic Pokemon = draw
Basic Pokemon vs Middle Evolution = middle evolution wins
Basic Pokemon vs Final Evolution = final evolution wins
Middle evolution vs Final Evolution = final evolution wins
    Type Effectiveness

If at least one of the Pokemon's types is SUPER EFFECTIVE against the opposing Pokemon, then you get a bonus equal to one evolution stage.

    Example:
Bulbasaur (Basic + Super effective) vs a Squirtle (Basic) = Bulbasaur wins
Bulbasaur (Basic + Super effective) vs Wartortle (Middle) = draw
Bulbasaur (Basic + Super effective) vs Blastoise (Final) = Blastoise wins
If both Pokemon are super-effective against each other, then the bonus cancels out.

    Example:
Bulbasaur (Basic + Super effective) vs Geodude (Basic + Super effective) = draw
Bulbasaur (Basic + Super effective) vs Graveler (Middle + Super effective) = Graveler wins
Ivysaur (Middle + Super effective) vs Gyarados (Final + Super effective) = Gyarados wins
Venusaur (Final + Super effective) vs Gyarados (Final + Super effective) = draw

    Example battle

    Trainer Alex challenges you!
"I'm a new trainer but I'll do my best!"

    Pidgeotto (Middle, Normal/Flying type)
    Sandshrew (Basic, Ground type)
    Metapod (Middle, Bug type)

Choose three of your own Pokemon to battle with! To make it simple, you can only use a Pokemon once per battle. So think of it like three 1 vs 1 battles!

    My team:

    Charmander (Basic, Fire type)
    Abra (Basic, Psychic type)
    Nidorino (Middle, Poison type)

    The battle! Round One!

Pidgeotto (Middle, Normal/Flying type) vs Nidorino (Middle, Poison type)
    No type bonuses. Draw.

    Round Two!

Sandshrew (Basic, Ground type) vs Abra (Basic, Psychic type)
    No type bonuses. Draw.

    Round Three!

Metapod (Middle, Bug type) vs Charmander (Basic, Fire type)
    Charmander is super effective. Draw.

Final outcome: Battle is a draw!

    VERMILION CITY GYM

    Gym Rules:
You will battle with three Pokemon.
The gym will function as three 1 vs 1 battles.
You must win at least two of the three battles to defeat Lt. Surge.
Any battle which ends in a draw is counted as a loss.

"Hey, kid! What do you think you're doing here? You won't live long in combat! That's for sure!
I tell you kid, electric Pokémon saved me during the war! They zapped my enemies into paralysis!
The same as I'll do to you!"

    Pokemon:
    (Basic, Electric type)
    (Final, Electric/Steel type)
    (Final, Electric type)

Individual Prize: Thunder Badge , evolve one Pokemon.

BONUS! HARD MODE PRIZE: Defeat all 3 of Lt. Surge's Pokemon to receive 1x shiny charm. You may come back and do this after you've already defeated the gym once. To use your shiny charm, post in the Wild Pokemon Claim thread stating which Pokemon you want to shinify.

Post your battle below. When your battle is approved and your name is added to the first post under Certified Trainers, you may go ahead and request to evolve a Pokemon in the Wild Pokemon Claim thread.

After a brief mention of a prize to be earned in this gym... I know what I must do. I MUST PREVAIL!

    Party:
    Wiglytuff: Normal, Final
    Raichu: Electric, Final
    Dugtrio: Ground, Final

    Round 1:
Wigglytuff slaps the silly Voltorb, it ragequits and self-destructs. Wigglytuff tanks out the self-destructive nature of the little Voltorb and prevails.

    Round 2:
Magneton may be a difficult foe...
However, electric resists electric and steel, with steel doing nothing for resisting Electric. So! We fight electricity with electricity! Raichu!
...But in the end, I learn that one does not simply fight electricity with electricity.

    Round 3:
The final opponent, the same species as one of my strongest... A Raichu.
Luckily, I came prepared. Dugtrio makes a hole and puts Raichu in a little ditch.

Outcome: I planned to have Charmander (that I might nickname 'Lancer') lose again, but I want the hard mode prize even if I likely won't use it and would gift it away if I could, so... 2/3 wins, be right back, I'll evolve a Pokemon and be back for revenge.

    Voltorb, Magneton, Raichu

Voltorb versus Haunter! Haunter manages to terrify Voltorb so much that its heart stops beating and therefore loses!
    Haunter wins!

Magneton versus Alakazam! Alakazam gives Magneton a quiz in calculus. Magneton is confused but somehow passes. Both Pokemon are so surprised by this outcome that they faint.
    Draw!

Raichu versus Sandslash! Sandslash mercilessly tears into its helpless foe. With the type immunity, there is absolutely nothing Raichu can do to resist. Raichu is utterly powerless and is absolutely doomed.
    Sandslash wins!

    2/3 I WIN

I just realized something. Given that Magneton is considered a middle Pokemon here, shouldn't have Onix been considered a Basic Pokemon?

I think Sarah just goofed up LOL. In the first post, she said we pretend Pokemon outside of Kanto don't exist. That said, do we also ignore Magnemite and Magneton's Steel-type?

I think things like types DO get retconned, since they're mechanical things. :p you know, core game mechanics
