I hate to ask this, but how many people will be even interested in the showdown portion of the event? I know a few people have said they would be if someone did showdown events, but I don't see them all that frequently so i can guage that properly.

I'm not sure... usually people will participate in WAR events even if they don't bother during the rest of the year, because they want points. xD But since this isn't WAR, I dunno how much interest it'll get. We're probably just gonna have to try it out and then if it has bad activity after the second week, it could be canceled, I guess. Still worth a try though. We usually get more active over summer.
As far as timelines go... let's say we want to start the event on Sunday July 2nd. We probably want to give it 2 weeks for members to come up with their teams and make banners, build hype etc. Which means teams need to be sorted by June 18th. It will probably take a few days to sort people into teams and figure out the number of teams and team leaders, and we'd want to give people at least a week to sign up for the event. So team sign ups should conclude by June 11th and therefore probably start on June 1st.
If events begin on July 2nd then we would want the events all finalised at least a couple weeks before, I reckon. To account for people being late etc. xD So let's say June 18th. That gives us time to come up with a schedule and everything for the 4 weeks. We'd want to give the judges as much time as possible to come up with their events and discuss them etc. so we should start recruiting judges ASAP and then leave sign ups open for at least a week.
So, summary of rough dates:
Judge sign ups: ASAP
Judge sign ups close: a week after ASAP
Judge selection: by June 1st
Individual sign ups begin: June 1st
Individual sign ups close: by June 11th for the first round, additional people will be sorted after.
Indivuduals sorted into teams and team leaders selected: by June 18th
Judges submit their events: by June 18th
Team names and themes finalised: by June 25th
Event threads are posted by judges: by June 25th
Schedule finalised and posted: by June 25th
EVENT BEGINS: July 2nd (Sunday)

I think that all looks good to me and should be pretty doable as long as everyone keeps up with their parts.
