I can remember becoming so confused as a child because there's more than one type of "first down" in a sense.
When i was a kid, i always wondered why they didn't go for it on 4th down, or why they didn't go for the 2 point conversion.

I still sometimes don't understand why they don't go for it on the fourth but that's beside the point.
Well, simply because if they don't pull it off and get the yards they need (which is very often the case considering a quarterback could get sacked or you have an incomplete pass), the opposing team will have a much closer head start toward the end zone simply because the ball never got punted to set them back 40 or so yards.
So yeah, I can understand why they usually don't want to risk it simply to provide breathing room for the team's defense. If it's down to the wire and there's simply no time left anyway and you need extra points because nothing else is enough as a do or die situation, then have at it on 4th down and hope for the best.
