The offense has 3 tries to run to a 1st down. They need to get the football 10 yards down the field. If they don't succeed, it is 4th down. A touchdown is worth 6 points, that is when the offense successfully makes it to the end of the field. After the touchdown, much like a field goal, the kicker kicks the ball through the yellow fork for an extra 1 point.
A defenses job is to murder the offense, make sure they stop breathing, no touchdown, grab the ball at all costs. Unless that defense's name is the Cleveland Brown, universal rule of american sports, Cleveland sucks(except for their basketball team)
That is the simple explanation. It is not constant, like soccer.
