It's a lot more forgiving than some of the other FPS games I've played. Not to mention the game sets you up with players of similar skill, so usually you won't be dumped into games where vets will eat everyone in sight.
For example, I play D.Va a lot. You really don't need to be big on aiming with her either, since her mech guns fire in a spread formation and unless you're really close to your target, you're not going to do much damage to them anyway and it mostly functions as suppressing fire so other teammates can jump in and attack alongside you. Her mech can take quite a bit of damage (she's classified as a tank character, meaning she's meant to take on a lot of punishment and she's meant to be on the frontline of the fight), she can put up a defense matrix barrier in case you're taking a lot of gunfire, and she has a thruster which can provide a quick way to head to an objective, dash to cover, or even fly up to a better vantage point (it actually took me a while to realize she can fly upwards with this). Even when the mech is destroyed, she ejects herself and can fight on foot for a while, though she is quite fragile outside of the mech. As long as you fall back and attack from a distance, you'll be able to call in another mech and get back into the fray. Meanwhile, her ultimate ability is she can make her mech self-destruct, which creates a large blast radius. It isn't so great on maps that have a lot of cover, but if you catch the enemy team off guard and unprepared to deal with it, you can blow up quite a few people with it! I've gotten quite a few Plays of the Game doing this.
Some of the things you do need to watch out for while playing D.Va is while in mech form, she's a HUGE target. You will definitely eat sniper bullets from Widowmaker and Ana and lots of rockets from Pharah. If she gets surrounded and attacked from all angles, she's toast. She's also a bit on the slow side.
Some heroes will definitely "click" for you once you've played them for a while (you can test every hero and their abilities in a kind of training arena so you know how they work). Try all of them! Sometimes I play heroes I usually don't touch just for a fresh feel and to see if I discover any new neat strategies.
