You could still backup your good stuff, reformat, and reinstall everything. It's a long process, but it at least gets your computer back up and kicking once again. Unless of course your computer was so old to the point where it's just not worth it. I've had that happen before.
Doesn't work in my case. Somehow it always gets about just as bad not long later :(
