Cicadas

Cicadas, you either know them and hate them, or don't know them and should be counting your blessings for not having heard nature's version of dial up connection.

So, for the select few of you that don't know of cicadas, these bugs are most infamously known for two things: 1) their ridiculously long reproduction cycle lasting anywhere from 13-17 years and 2) being the loudest thing you'll hear in your entire life. And I know what you Australians are thinking, but yes, these are what American cicadas are like and they are the single most annoying creature God put on this earth. Don't say I'm exaggerating either. Click here for a video of what these guys sound like. Now times the volume of that by about a thousand and that's what I am currently listening to because my bed is next to a window.

So, cicadas, what's your opinion on them?

I find cicadas pretty interesting (then again, I like most bugs), but their sound...not so much. Luckily there aren't any right by my house, but when I go to walk my dog...cicadas. Cicadas everywhere.

They're pretty annoying, but not to the point where I wear ear buds all night. I certainly don't find the sound pleasant, though...I can't remember it being this bad for a while! tfw u live in mountainous north carolina

I love them! My brothers and I used to save them from birds who were trying to eat them. :< Poor cicadas. We only get them in summer, though, so I only hear them during part of the year. It's been a long time since I touched or held one, but I love doing so because they're so cool! Then let them go, of course. c:

They're okay. I kind of just ignore and tune out the noises after a while. I'd rather deal with cicadas than mosquitos or wasps for sure.

Their noise is a bit annoying, but I don't really pay attention to them that much. To be honest though, until seeing this thread I had never really considered that there weren't cicadas everywhere. I mean, obviously there are places without cicadas, but I hadn't really thought about it. Really though they are SO loud, I hear them right now louder than the birds.

I have only heared cicadas one time when i was in italy some years ago, they were loud but i remember enjoying their sound

Haha sometimes in Summer they are so loud. But they eventually end up just being part of the background noise. They can be really ear splitting which is annoying but on the other hand, they remind me of summer so I kinda like them.

I'm from the UK, and I don't think we get Cicadas? I didn't really know what they were; I have heard the name before, but I had to google them and listen to their sound, and it's not one I recognise.

They do look similar to both grasshoppers and crickets though, which make noises that I tend to hear in the summer months.
