The name kind of stuck for the longest time, but when Emolga came around, I loved the heck out of that crazy, mischievous flying squirrel way too much (Emolga has a cool and cute design too!) so Pikachu got dethroned. I kept the Neo part since it's a cool word for something that's new and cool, even though the Matrix references have been long gone since then.
I still remember that April Fools jokes. ;]
