    What is happiness?
    It's being called by someone
It's being able to call someone
It's when someone is thinking of you
But Heaven has none of this
A lizard girl took pity on God
So the lizard girl tore God in two and brought a half from Heaven to Earth

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the whole job hunt thing. Everything I find on company websites is usually Senior Manager, Director, or some high-level crap like that. I try for the Associate Director stuff, but most of the time those things are a long shot. Any place that requires 10+ years of extremely specific experience is really a joke.

What's really comical is an "entry level job" posting asking for 3-5 years of experience. Oh HR, whatever stuff you've been snorting off of the table really isn't good for you.

Oh my god. Do you know how long it took me to find a job coming out of Uni? A YEAR. A. YEAR. All because of these stupid job requirements that say you need to have at least 2-3 years experience, but how, in the name of Arceus, is that supposed to happen when I NEED a job to get said experience? It's like a never-ending spiral. *headdesk*

Honestly, there is something very wrong in the way this world works. I was super surprised the Uni course didn't offer a placement or something near the end of the year to get a foot in the door at least somewhere.

Out of college, it took me six months to finally land something. I had gone to my university's career center at least FIVE times looking for help, resume guidance, and all that other stuff. No luck. To them it just seemed like I was a number and they did the absolute bare minimum to pass as a career center. And by the way, the job I landed after six months was thanks to my dad, not to my university career center.

    This system sucks.

It seriously is hard to land a job now. Mostly, a main reasoning being that nearly every single job requires online applications ONLY. So you never meet with anyone. You literally put your application and hopes into words alone on a computer screen. Now one thing that does seem to help is trying to meet with a manager (or higher up capable of handling recommendations for new employees) if they are available and not busy just to introduce yourself.

In all honestly that's one thing that helped me. I had been putting in applications all over town for months and never even received a phone call or email back. So one day my family was out shopping. My dad actually went right over to the mangers booth and tried to get someone to talk to for me so I can speak with them about getting my foot in to door so to speak. So I got to introduce myself to her and she understood the situation. Being time for seasonal hires she told me to just go online when I get home and put in an application and to come back later and let her know when I applied and she would help look at it and get it through. Though it didn't happen "that" day still when I applied it happened a few days later. I got an interview and hours later I got a call asking for the second final interview.

It's really bad how universities don't help in these regards. We go to college in hopes to be able to get jobs easier....but how can you get a job (even with a degree), but no experience? That Bachelors degree or Masters may mean nothing without experience. it's bad that we have to rely on only online applications (for most it seems).

    The time is upon us...

I agree that universities should definitely help people get real work experience. I have a 2nd year student who has been working with me, volunteering in the lab over the holidays. At least she knows what it's actually like now. I had no idea when I was an undergrad and if I had known what job prospects were like for scientists right now, I would probably be a software engineer instead. xD It's ridiculous that everyone wants experience for even basic jobs. I guess they are just lazy and think it'll be cheaper not to have to train people at all. Sigh.

I just got this casual job helping students with their assignments in the university library. It's only for a few hours each week. But I now have to do 4 hours of online training followed by a WHOLE DAY of training on Monday. Ugh. I'm kinda regretting applying for it. xD I am doing the online training now and was kinda hoping I could do it way faster than they said but turns out it's a bunch of videos to watch. How much training can you possibly need to give people assignment advice?! I only had to do 2 hours of training to actually TEACH in a lab for Ho-Oh's sake. xD

Anyway I have the training videos on in the background now... :P

A lot of degree programs here and at other colleges require you to do an internship/coop in order to graduate. My department last reported something like 88% job placement upon graduating with 10% going to grad school. Just gotta know how to network, that's what it comes down to.

Pretty much this. One company I came across that give me an interview, Banker's Life Insurance, expected YOU, as the new hire, to pay for the training courses (and they were absurdly expensive, I'm talking thousands here), your desk, your supplies, your computer, your tools, everything, even your freaking phone. And it was all commission based. So basically, you run their business for them and incur all of the expenses and business risk, and they just take a large chunk of your success earnings away (why not just start your own business then?). Or, if you're not successful, it doesn't matter, they've made money off of you anyway. I vowed to myself that if they ever dippy enough to give me an interview invite again for such a raw deal, instead of showing up in a suit, I'd show up in my skunk costume with a sign that says "this place smells even worse than I do."

In the meantime, I really can't stand the whole "it's not what you know, it's who you know" nonsense, because that basically says it's okay to be an uneducated idiot and a liability to the company as long as you just happen to know the right people. Meanwhile, there are plenty of really skilled people out there that shouldn't be struggling to get jobs just because they're not extroverted social butterflies. Don't hire from your pool of buddies if you know there are people applying that are better educated, more skilled, and more capable of doing the job than they are. Otherwise, what you're doing is going against what's best for the company. Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm these days...

Hate to say it, but if colleges don't start proving the worth of a college degree, especially considering how much they cost to obtain, they're going to become obsolete.

Wow @Neo Emolga, that is so dodgy! I can't believe they want you to pay for everything PLUS it's commission based! That's crazy!

I hate the networking thing too. It's really unfair. I'm terrible at talking to people. I know networking is really important for science too because if you know the guy who runs the lab, that's all that really matters. Blah. It really shouldn't be so hard to find a job if you want to work. If it's this bad already, imagine how much worse it's gonna get as things become more and more automated! I know some countries have been experimenting with having a basic wage that everyone gets paid each year no matter what, which seems pretty interesting. It might have been Iceland or something? I can't remember.
