Cat. As long as you can feed it and give it water and don't act like a jerk, it's hard to go wrong with a cat.

He likes to shred his toys, and I gave him a big 12 inch beanie baby monster toy I got for Christmas 3 years ago. The living room looks like a murder scene covered in fluff.

I suggest starting with like a hamster. I've had 3, and they're relatively easy to take care of. They don't live very long though, but they're really cute. If you want a longer living pet, a Russian Tortoise is a good choice too. They don't get too big and can live for almost 20 years

Oh. And litter box. Though you can get a self cleaning one. Also, you don't have to go outside to do it.
