Books that have been turned into movies

How do you feel about books that have been turned into movies/TV shows? Are there any that you really like? Any horrible ones? Which are your favourites?

I love reading books that have had a movie made from them, and then watching the movie and seeing what's changed! I always try and read the book first. The only exception so far is Game of Thrones, where I am watching the corresponding TV show season before reading each book.

My favourite adaptations are Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park and Tomorrow When The War Began. I can't think of any terrible ones right now, but I will post when they come to me. xD

I am also looking forward to The Giver, because I liked those books. And The Maze Runner which I haven't read yet, but hope to read before seeing the movie!

Aesthetically, The Hunger Games was a pretty movie. But I just don't like it anymore, after realizing that really it was just a dull idea.

I was reading The Giver (God, I must finish that) and I'd love to see the film.

I couldn't put down the Maze Runner when I read it, so I can't wait for the movie.

So is the Maze Runner good? O: I've actually never heard of it.

The first two Harry Potter movies were awesome (third is my favourite), then the guy who played Dumbledore died and it all went to hell from there. xD Hunger Games was good, and I really loved Divergent. Lord of the Rings was epic, too. On the topic of Tomorrow When the War Began, I'm disappointed they didn't make any more movies. :/ I really thought it was good.

I love to read books first, however. And I'm usually disappointed in at least some aspect when they're transferred to film. xD

I'm looking forward to The Maze Runner, and of course I can't fault Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Lord of the Rings was pretty good, but I'm still annoyed that each book was only three hours long yet the Hobbit is over NINE ~~thousand~~ hours of film.

As for bad ones.... I'll list three.

The Golden Compass - His Dark Materials as a trilogy is mind-blowing, including the Northern Lights. The Golden Compass was so disastrously wrong, and a horrible film version of the first book.

Ender's Game - It isn't that it's particularly bad, it just was hyped up to be fantastic and, well, wasn't, by a long shot. It had so much potential and failed to grasp that well.

Eragon - I'm not going to say much here. It was god-awful. I despise it.

Harry Potter was definitely pretty good. I understand why they had to leave stuff out considering it's already a long movie, but I think they did a pretty darn good job with it. Special effects were definitely flawlessly implemented. See, I would love to write a fantasy novel, have it get adapted into a movie, and let it get that kind of special treatment. Even if things aren't 100% how I imagined it, I would still adore to see it come to life like that.

I read Eragon after watching the movie, and I'll be honest, I didn't like the movie or the book all that much.

The Hobbit, I feel, definitely got a MAJOR upgrade with regards to the movie. The book itself is a generally easy read from start to finish, but the movie trilogy based on it takes the storyline into overdrive mode and is definitely very enjoyable, even though there are quite a few different things going on.

Also, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was a book I read way back in fifth grade that I didn't like all that much, but the movie adaptation was AWESOME in comparison.

I liked the film of The Golden Compass, but I haven't actually read the book (shock horror), so I can't say anything about the continuity.

Of course, there's Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle, but it's so different from the book - it's like they took ideas from the book, then made their own plot with it.

I thought the Golden Compass film was fairly good, though I haven't actually read the books. So...yeah. xD

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my all-time favourite movies! Along with Spirited Away. If you don't know Studio Ghibli I recommend you look 'em up cause they're ABSOLUTELY AWESOMESAUCE.

Also Narnia is really awesome, both the books and movies. I heard they were making The Magician's Nephew and The Silver Chair. I wonder which one will come first. O:

So I saw the advert for The Giver and now I don't even want to finish the book, the advert has put me off so much...

Ahh you're making me really want to read it now. I've been meaning to for ages! xD I'm glad lots of people seem to like it, it must be good!

The Dumbledore switch was pretty sad. The third HP movie is awesome! I really liked the fifth though because Umbridge is so much fun to hate. I thought Divergent was done well too! And I really liked Hunger Games not only because it looked good but because they stuck so close to the books! In too many adaptations they miss out a lot of stuff (mostly for time I guess) and sometimes that ruins things, especially if there was a particular scene you really wanted to see. I'm still disappointed about not seeing all the weird rooms in the Department of Mysteries in HP5! xD

Oh my gosh, I was so disappointed they didn't make more Tomorrow movies as well! I love those books and the first movie was so good! By now the actors are probably too old though. I wonder what happened. :(

I couldn't believe it when I heard they were making The Hobbit into 3 (super long!) movies. It still seems pretty ridiculous considering how short the book is. But I can't say I disliked the extra stuff they've added in so far, although I really just want to see more Aragorn. xD

Ohh I agree with you about The Golden Compass. His Dark Materials are some of my favourite books ever and I don't think the movie really captured that very well, although I did think the girl who played Lyra did a good job. I was sad they didn't make the rest of them into movies. Ender's Game was also a bit of a disappointment. I'd only just read the book before the movie came out. I guess a lot of it was hard to translate but it seemed pretty anticlimactic over all. I have read Eragon but haven't seen the movie, I've heard it was pretty bad though.

Oh I really liked the Narnia books! I've only seen two of the movies (I don't know if there are more by now xD) but I really liked them, especially the first one. They did a really good job on them!

The trailer doesn't look that great, does it? I really enjoyed the book though. I think it's still worth finishing!
