So no, here, yank has nothing to do with which state you live in. It just refers to anything American. Case closed. Not sure how other countries interpret it, but the way it is used here, and the way I use it are like that.
And Xanthe, that depends on the person. I can honestly say I know no Europeans who would take offence to that if used in a banterish manner, just like I wouldn't take offence to being called a yobo or a bogan. They were it like a badge of pride. And I have turned down two crap jobs in jobseekers
