    Deltarune

Chapter 3 and 4 of Deltarune came out this week!

Has anyone been playing it? How are you enjoying it compared to Undertale?

No spoilers for chapter 3 and 4 please!!

Yep, I've been playing it! I was playing the demo (left off somewhere in Chapter 2) but decided to do a full restart just as a storyline and "how do I play this again" refresher. I also missed a few things in my first playthrough that I got to enjoy this time around.

The game is definitely great. Like Undertale, it's got a really goofy style of humor and charm that not too many other games have. Characters talk about the most random things and have quirky interests but somehow it still stays on point and doesn't distract from the overall game or go too off track to the point where it loses the immersion. The other nice thing is you could have a pretty low-end computer and still enjoy it. Once again, it proves you can have a superstar game without all the fancy graphics and stuff. It just needs heart, soul, memorable characters to root for, and capture the spirit of fun. Deltarune does exactly that!

I also played 1 and 2 ages ago and I couldn't remember much. I read some recaps of the story but I'd kinda forgotten how to battle haha. I decided not to replay it though and just dove into chapter 3 and it was fairly forgiving in reminding you what to do.

I agree, it just goes to show that all the super realistic graphics and stuff are not necessary to make a game good. The world is just so alive. I get the most intense nostalgia from it haha!

Definitely true, there's plenty of games out there that have pretty good graphics, but they completely missed the mark on just being fun and enjoyable. At the end of the day, great graphics are a nice supplement, but the game itself needs a lot of other qualities to be a winner.

So far, who do you think is your favorite character? Mine's Ralsei, he's a nice, lovable guy and his reactions to Susie's banters are great. xD

I really like Ralsei too. He seems so sweet and kind. I just wanna take care of him! xD I find Kris super fascinating too though. And I really liked Noelle's design. There are so many wacky side characters too.

Since playing Undertake, I've also played Earthbound on the Switch SNES thing. I loved it so much and could definitely see how Undertale and Pokemon took inspiration from it. Have you played it Neo?

Yeah, they're all great characters! I think it's physically impossible to play through this game and not laugh and chuckle at all the funny conversations and nonsense that goes on. xD

And yep, I've played through Earthbound several times. Definitely another great game that's got that fun and quirky kind of flavor to it and throws a lot of unexpected things your way. These kinds of games are great and it's nice to see plenty of people enjoy them.

I literally laughed out loud while playing Deltarune the other day. I can't remember why now, I think it was a random item description xD It's been so long since a game made me do that haha! I got to the final move of a big battle and assumed I had won so I didn't wanna waste an item healing but then it turned out I had to survive one more attack and I lost!!! Serves me right but so frustrating haha. I had to stop playing for a bit xD

Also I've been playing on Switch and I feel like it's a lot harder to dodge attacks than I remember from Undertale. I can't remember if I used a mouse for that or what though. It was definitely on steam...

Earthbound also seemed so grown up for it's time, but maybe that's because I'm used to Pokemon haha.

Yeah, I get that, too! This game knows exactly how to whip out the unexpected and make it hilarious and fantastic without feeling out of place or annoying. And yeah, sometimes that happens to me too where I almost beat a boss or pass an obstacle but just don’t quite make it. Thankfully the difficulty in Deltarune isn’t too extremely unforgiving in a Dark Souls or Elden Ring kind of way. Usually on the second or third go, you’ll conquer whatever got you last time. It rarely has that feeling like you’re soft-locked into a bad, inescapable situation. But yeah, in case you get a game over, I feel having that pre-emptive knowledge of the enemy attacks and what you’re supposed to do going into a battle again usually makes a pretty big impact.

I’ve been playing on PC and I feel like the difficulty is about the same compared to Undertale. Some attacks are wild and I feel like it’s nearly impossible to avoid them. Others are rough at first, but once you figure out the pattern, it’s not too bad. Still, I do burn through healing items quite a bit if I’m not able to heal with Ralsei due to low TP.

As good as Earthbound is, it doesn’t have quite the same humor as Undertale and Deltarune, but the kind of randomness is there. The personalities of Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo (that name…) aren’t quite as sharp and endearing as what you see from Susie and Ralsei along with all the other side-characters you meet along the way. I think my only thing with Kris is the character comes off as being very stoic and impassive, although the game gives you the option to say and do some really oddball, silly things that almost seem out of character for Kris, who usually seems very silent and not the type to goof around. Maybe that’s what makes it even funnier sometimes. Like just randomly eating moss just because it’s there. xD
