Alice tried to get a good look at the grunts. She could only see two, but there could have easily been more in the darkness. Rose agreed that there were only two. Alice thought she heard the word 'stones'. Were these the ones who had robbed the museum? Suddenly she had an idea.

"We have the element of surprise right now," she whispered to the group. "Maybe we should use it to our advantage. I think we can beat these two, but it will be even better if we can catch them off guard."

Alice quietly sent out Marionette. "Go and give those two the fright of their lives," she whispered to the ghost.

Marionette grinned rather creepily and then went invisible. Alice crouched behind a large boulder and waited to see what would happen. The cave was rather spooky in the dim light.

"Let's get ready to battle," she whispered to the others. "If something goes wrong, we can retreat instead."

Alice was feeling a little more confident lately. She was less timid and more likely to act when Max wasn't around to lead them. She realised then that Max made her kind of nervous. Her strange desire to impress him caused her to question herself and keep quiet.
