Alice nervously entered the gym. It was pretty dark inside. The walls were all made of stone, as if the building had been hewn out of rock. She took a few steps forward, unsure what exactly to do. Suddenly there was a clicking sound and the lights flashed on. Before her was an arena filled with rocks of different sizes. At the other end seemed to be a giant Marowak...

"Hey! If you're here to challenge Brock, you'll have to get through me first. Go ahead and try us!" it yelled out.

Wait a second... it wasn't a Marowak at all! It was just a trainer wearing a Marowak skull for some strange reason. Alice quietly wondered if all trainers in Kanto would be dressed up in weird Pokemon costumes.

"I accept your challenge!" Alice said, trying to sound confident, but her voice shook a little. She stepped forward into the challenger's square.

Trainer Alice challenges the Pewter City Gym!
    Aster (Lv 20)
    [Bulbasaur, Male]
    Domino (Lv 5)
    [Rattata, Female]
    Marionette (Lv 7)
    [Shuppet, Female]
    Javelin (Lv 6)
    [Spearow, Male]
    Fervor (Lv 9)
    [Mankey, Female]
    Citrus (Lv 15)
    [Butterfree, Male]

    VS Hardhead Tommy

The Marowak-guy threw a red and white orb into the air and a Marowak appeared on the field. "No surprises there," thought Alice, but she knew it wouldn't be an easy battle. The Marowak begun spinning its bone club in the air. It looked well trained, and as a fully evolved Pokemon, it would have an advantage over most of her team.

Alice had made up her mind before she even walked into the gym, and she knew it was important to stick to her plan. "Citrus! I need you!" she called, throwing the Butterfree's Pokeball into the arena.

Citrus hovered steadily at the edge of the rocky arena. The Marowak-guy didn't hesitate. He shouted commands and his Pokemon obeyed with lightning speed. It threw it's bone club across the field. Citrus ducked down behind a rock just in time. The bone crashed against the well-worn stone before returning to Marowak's hand.

    "Try Confusion!" Alice instructed.

Citrus flew out of hiding, his normally red eyes glowing an eerie blue. Marowak's bone flew out of its hand, before zooming into the air and coming back down to strike the surprised Pokemon hard on the head. The clanging sound echoed through the building.

Marowak tottered a little. "Now's your chance! Use Gust and then Tackle!" Alice said.

Citrus flew at the recovering Marowak, pulling up short and flapping his wings madly. The resulting breeze whipped at the Marowak, causing it to slide back against a rock. The gale set dust flying everywhere. While Marowak and its trainer were incapacitated, Citrus flew through the debris, slamming into the Marowak and crushing it into the rock behind it. There was a horrible cracking sound as the rock gave way, and the Marowak slumped against the ground.

After the dust settled, the Marowak trainer returned his Pokemon. "Well I guess you beat me, but you'll have a hard time against Brock!" he said, exiting the arena.

    VS Gym Leader Brock

The lights dimmed again, and when they came back on, a tall man dressed in orange was standing at the other end of the arena.

"Challenger, announce yourself!" his voice called out.

"I'm Alice, from Ambrette Town, Kalos," Alice called back. Citrus hovered protectively by her side.

"Wow, it's not often that we get a challenger from over seas. I'm Brock the Pewter Gym Leader. I'm an expert on Rock-type Pokémon," he said. "My Pokémon are impervious to most physcial attacks. You'll have a hard time inflicting any damage. Challenger, are you ready?"

"Ready!" Alice replied, nodding at Citrus.

"Then come on!" Brock threw a Pokeball into the arena. A Pokemon that looked like a boulder with two strong arms emerged and hovered slightly off the ground.

Citrus looked at Alice, seemingly nervous. "Don't worry," she said. "Just try your best! Its Rock attacks will be super effective against you, try not to get hit!"

"Freee!" Citrus cooed, then headed into the arena.

"Let's try and hit it with Stun Spore!"

The Geodude immediately began shovelling at the arena, sending rocks flying towards Citrus. The Butterfree dodged them as best he could, climbing higher and higher as he neared.

"You'll need to get in close," Alice instructed.

"Let's see about that!" Brock countered. The Geodude began to spin, sending waves of debris into the air. Citrus was sent hurtling backward.

    "Counter with Gust!" Alice called.

Citrus began flapping his wings hard. The breeze cleared the air and sent the dust flying back at Geodude, which stopped spinning, and tried to shield itself.

    "Now!" Alice yelled.

Citrus sped forward, getting in close with a Stun Spore attack. The powder settled on Geodude's body, but the Rock type took a swipe at the butterfly as he passed, and Citrus was knocked hard to the ground.

"Free~ee," he struggled to get up, but it was no good. Alice returned her Pokemon. "Thank you, you did amazingly," she said.

Alice hoped that Citrus' Stun Spore would come in handy later in the battle. She grabbed Aster's Pokeball from her jacket pocket and released the green dinosaur. "It's all up to you now," she said when he appeared. "I know you can do this!"

"Saur!" Aster agreed, stepping forward into the arena.

"Stay strong, Geodude!" Brock called from the other side.

"Try and hit it with Vine Whip!" Alice said.

Aster leapt into the battle, heading straight for the Rock-type. His vines extended from his sides and snaked their way through the air, attempting to ensnare the Geodude. At the last moment, the Geodude began to spin again. Aster's vines were smacked away and he retracted them. The debris sent up from the battle field made Alice's eyes water.

"We can't hit it while it's spinning," she called. "Wait for an opening!"

"We can keep this up all day," Brock smirked.

The Geodude's attack seemed to go on for a long time. Alice could see that the debris spattering against Aster was starting to wear down his health. Just when she thought her strategy would fail, the Geodude suddenly stopped, paralysed.

"It can't move!" Alice called to Aster, recognising the effects of Citrus' final attack. "Now's our chance!"

Without waiting for a comment, Aster sped at the Rock-type, his vines slashing at it viciously. The Geodude was unable to defend itself and after a final thwack, fell to the ground, unmoving.

"Great job!" Alice cheered, while Brock returned his Pokemon.

"That was just a warm up," the Gym Leader said. "See how you go against this one!"

A giant snake made of rock appeared before Brock. It made Aster look tiny in comparison. The Onix let out a deafening roar, which shook the arena, causing dust to drift down from the ceiling.

    "Stay calm," Alice warned Aster.

    "Onix, Dig!" Brock called.

The rock snake leapt into the air, something Alice would not have thought possible, and then tunneled into the arena floor. The ground shook beneath Alice's feet as she struggled to hold her footing.

"Careful Aster!" Alice yelled. "Be ready to hit it with Razor Leaf!"

Aster looked around, but it was impossible to tell where the rock snake had gone. Suddenly it sprung up, right underneath the Grass type, sending him flying backwards into a rock. He got up quickly; however, and crouched again, ready for another attack. The Onix disappeared back underground.

"Focus," Alice called out. "Try and feel the vibrations. When you feel it coming, jump to the side!"

This time when the Onix tried to stike, Aster was ready. He jumped left and was hit with a glancing blow to the side. He recovered well, spun in mid air and shot a barrage of sharp leaves at the Onix. The super effective attack sliced through the Rock type's strong hide, causing it to roar in pain.

    "Well done!" Alice called.

At the other side of the Arena, Brock laughed. "Not bad."

"Let's finish this battle," Alice said, finally starting to feel more confident in her and Aster's abilities. "Use Vine Whip to launch yourself into the air, then hit Onix from behind!"

"Not so fast," Brock replied, as Aster shot behind Onix. "Iron Tail!"

    "Grab it!" Alice countered.

As Aster hovered for a moment over the Onix's back, its strong tail whipped up, glowing metallically. Aster shot out a vine and gripped onto it, using its force to help him dodge away from the attack.

    "Now hit it!" Alice called.

Aster released his vine and shot a barrage of leaves at the Onix, this time hitting the Pokemon in the back. The rock snake shuddered in fury and then fell to the ground, its body clanging against the rocks and causing the building to shake. A plume of dust spread from the impact site, shielding the arena. When it cleared, Aster was the only one left standing.

"Aster!" Alice called, unable to hide her excitement. "You did it!"

"Saur!" Aster cried, running towards his trainer. Alice hugged him happily.

She couldn't believe she had managed to win her first Gym battle. All the worries from that morning slowly drifted away.

"You did well," Brock said, as he approached from the other side of the arena. Your Ivysaur is strong. Keep training together." He shook Alice's hand. "I have other appointments, but please return later to collect your badge."

Alice nodded and thanked Brock for the battle.

Nathan walked towards the long aisle that laid to the back, until he was interrupted by a skull-wearing maniac.

"Penelope, come out here!" said Nathan, sending out his Pidgey. "Pidgey!" cried Penelope. "Go, Marowak!" said the trainer, sending out his Pokemon. Out came a Pokemon who looked very much like him, just that it wasn't wearing a suit. "Ok, Penelope, let's use Sand-Attack!" commanded Nathan. Penelope ran towards the Marowak and kicked up the dirt on the ground. Dirt was shot at Marowak's eyes. "Marowak!" cried Marowak from the pain in its eyes. "Oh no! Marowak use Bonemerang!" said Tommy. Marowak threw its bone at Penelope. Penelope flew up and dodge the bone. The bone returned to Marowak's hand after Penelope dodged it. Marowak still had sand in its eyes. Leafy and Shich sat next to Nathan, watching the battle. "Use Gust, Penelope!" directed Nathan. The flying Pidgey flapped his wings back and forth really quickly and made a strong wind that blew the Marowak back. "Marowak, use Bonemerang!" directed Tommy. Marowak threw the bone in the opposite direction ,since it couldn't see a thing, and Penelope kept on flying, wondering what the Marowak was doing if she was right there. "Penelope use Tackle!" said Nathan. Penelope flew high up and dived towards the blind Marowak. "Marowak, quick dodge!" shout Tommy "Marowak?" said the confused Marowak, sicne it did not know that Penelope was attacking. Penelope slammed right into the Marowak from behind. Penelope flew back towards Nathan, awaiting for Marowak's attack. Marowak rubbed the sand out of its eyes and could finally see. "Marowak use Bonemerang!" commanded Tommy. "Marowak!" cried the Marowak throwing the bone at the flying Pidgey. Penelope flew up and dodged the Bonemerang once, but then the Bonermerang came back and hit Penelope from behind. Penelope got hit really badly and crashed down into the ground. "Come on Penelope, get up. Finish it off with Quick Attack!" directed Nathan. Penelope forced herself up, and ran towards Marowak. Penelope rann it a quick beam of light. Marowak tried to dodge the attack, but Penelope came in too fast. Marowak was sent back and hit against a rock wall. Marowak fainted and fell face forward. 'Marowak..." moaned the unconscious Marowak. "Come back, Marowak," said Tommy sending Marowak back, "You've proven yourself, worthy, now you may go on and challenge our leader, Brock."

Result: Marowak faints, Pidgey holds on with 1 point left. Nathan wins!

Nathan continued to walk down the long aisle and went up a fleet of stairs and finally came towards the gym leader.

"Wow, it's not often that we get a challenger from over seas. I'm Brock the Pewter Gym Leader. I'm an expert on Rock-type Pokémon. My Pokémon are impervious to most physcial attacks. You'll have a hard time inflicting any damage. I hope your first gym battle here in Kanto sets a tone."

"Ivysaur," said Leafy confidently stepping forward on the battlefield. "Hmm, a Grass type. No surprise there," said Brock, "Goedude I choose you!" Brock sent out the Rock type. "Geodude!" cried the Goedude. "Let the battle begin," said Brock. "Leafy use Sleep Powder!" directed Nathan. "Geodude, use Tackle!" commanded Brock. Leafy shot out a cloud of white powder, however Geodude dodged it. Geodude ran towards Leafy and slammed itself into him. "Leafy use Vine Whip!" said Nathan. "Tackle, Geodude," said Brock. Leafy brought out its vine and used Vine Whip on Geodude. The Geodude fainted instantly from the Vine Whip.

    Result: Geodude faints. Ivysaur wins.

"Hmm, not bad for a beginner. now let's see you handle this next Pokemon! Come out Onix!" said Brock, sending out his Onix.

    2nd Battle:

    Opponent: Onix
    Attacker: Ivysaur
    Opponent's Point Value: 20
    Attacker's Point Value 15

"Onix use Curse!" said Brock. "Leafy, use Leech Seed!" said Nathan. Leafy shot seeds out Onix, which grew into plants, and covered it head to toe. Onix then glowed in red. "You see, Onix's Curse lowers it's Speed, but raises its Attack and Defense. So, Onix is now slower, but stronger," said Brock. Leech Seed then sapped health from Leafy. "Leafy use Growl!" directed Nathan; Nathan wanted to lower Onix's Attack, so it couldn't hurt Leafy. "Use Curse again Onix!" said Nathan. Leafy used Growl which frightened Onix a bit. However, Curse then made Onix feel stronger an less intimidated of Leafy. "Leafy, use Vine Whip!" said Nathan. "Use Gyro Ball, Onix!" commanded Brock. "Leafy pulled out his vines and used Vine Whip on Onix, Onix didn't feel that much damage. Onix then turned silver and spun around and around. It came towards Leafy and Leafy was hit pretty badly. "You see, Gyro Ball does more damage if Onix is slow," said Bock. Nathan realized that Brock lowered Onix's Speed, so that Gyro Ball would do a lot of damage. Leech Seed then sapped health from Onix, however Leafy still felt weak. Nathan was stumped, if Vine Whip won't do much damage and Leafy is close to fainting. "Onix, finish it off with Gyro Ball!" said Brock. Nathan still couldn't think of a plan. Another Gyro Ball ,would surely KO Ivysaur. Onix turned silver and began to spin. Leafy got up and Nathan was still fumbled. "Ivysaur!" cried out Leafy as Onix's Gyro Ball came closer. Leafy shook around and suddenly, leaves appeared floating around Leafy. "Saur!" cried Leafy shooting the leaves straight at the incoming Onix. Onix was hit and failed in using Gyro Ball. "Leafy, I didn't kow you learned Razor Leaf?!" said Nathan. "Ivysaur," responded Leafy, ready to finish the job. Onix was a bit hurt from the Razor Leaf. Leech Seed sapped health from Onix, making Onix feel weaker. "Onix use Gyro Ball!" said Brock. "Quick, Leafy, use Razor Leaf!" commanded Nathan. Leaves floated around Leafy and shot at the Onix, before it could begin to use Gyro Ball. Leafy hit a critical hit on Onix, and Onix fainted. Onix fell on the ground, unconscious. "Come back, Onix," said Brock, sending Onix back.

Result: Onix faints. Ivysaur wins. Nathan wins the gym battle!

"Not bad for a beginning trainer. Your Ivysaur is really well trained. So, as proof of your victory, I present to you the Boulder Badge," said Brock, handing over the small medal. Nathan grabbed the badge and stuck it on his Trainer Card. "Now, the closest gym here, is the Cerulean City Gym, there you will fight against Misty, a Water-type specialist. That Ivysaur of your will come in really handy over there," said Brock. "So, I'll be going now. I got to go heal these guys up. Right Leafy?" said Nathan. "Ivysaur," responded Leafy in hapiness of his victory. "Combusken!" cried Shich, walking towards Nathan, congratulating him for his first gym victory. The three walked out of the gym's door.
