Here's the decision process I make when buying virtual goods:
- How badly do I want it and how expensive is it? If it looks incredibly awesome and/or is really helpful and it will drastically increase the enjoyment I get out of the game, that's already a good sign. If it's really not all that expensive and maybe only involves dropping a $20 for a whole butt-load of very useful loot that will give me a much-needed boost in the game, I'll consider doing it. But if I'm expected to drop $50 for something trivial, silly, and not very useful, it's not happening.
- How much am I already enjoying the game? If I already love the game (Eden Eternal is a great example of this), then by buying virtual goods, I'm telling the developer and publisher that this is a great game, I support it, and I want them to please keep it going. There are times when I fear if the game stops making money or isn't generating enough of a return on investment for them, they'll pull the plug on it.
- How many hours of effort would it take to earn the item otherwise? If I'm looking at weeks or even months of boring, tiring, and tedious gold-farming or whatever to earn what could be obtained with the money I make by doing an hour of job work, I'll drop the money, because to me, time is money also.
Also, that mug is cute. :)
