    Red Hot Hurties

What is the worst you've ever been sunburned (or other burned)? Where was it and how much did it hurt?!

My worst time was when I was about 17ish... I went to a beach with my family and, for some unfathomable reason, did not apply any sunscreen whatsoever... I had sunglasses, but I don't think I had a hat. I sort of wanted to read a book on the sand the whole time rather than go out of the shade and into the water, but I must have ended up going into the water and out of the shade (I don't remember some details). Because I was an idiot and did not apply any (which I'd never not done before, because I burn really easily), I got veerrryyy burnt on my shoulders, legs, arms and probably some of my face. It was so tender than even moving my limbs hurt. xD The worst part is that my shoulders bubbled. They were that fried that the next day/hours later/whatever, they were actually bubbling. Man, they absolutely stung to touch. I feel so sorry for my poor shoulders. xD I was so mean. Now I have freckles on both shoulders, which I didn't have before.

Funny but really gross: about a week or two after that happened, I went to a birthday party at one of those really awesome giant playgrounds you can rent out, and I remember running around and sweating so much that sweat was pooling under my peeling shoulder skin. XD It was sooooooooo gross. I kept peeling the skin off while nobody was looking. Sweaty, loose skin...sorry, cleaners! They probably thought some reptile had gotten in. XD

    So, what are your stories?!

So, fun fact about being a Caucasian female with two really dark parents in the south is that we don't tan naturally. We burn. Hard. The worst I've ever had was about two to three years ago, I was on vacation with a friend and I put on sunscreen but it washed off or didn't work or whatever. Long story short, my entire back that hadn't been covered by my bathing suit was bright bright red. Normally this isn't a big deal except I was sleeping on a couch and I can't sleep on my stomach on a couch because they're not wide enough, I have to sleep on my shoulder, so I barely slept that week because of the pain I felt every time I put one shoulder down. Clothes were also a pain to wear but I had to wear them because we had other people besides me and my friend's family there. That's probably the worst I've ever had but I get them all the time.

Let's see...it's been years. I was around 14 at the time when I got second degree burns. BAD burns. I was only a family vacation in South Carolina just spending time at the beach. That beach and town though is kinda worn down. Don't get me wrong it's still a big city. It's just most of it is run down now. Anyway, we decide it's a day to do nothing but go outside and just stay there. So my brother and I suit up in our bathing suits and get as much sunscreen as possible on. Once we do we go to the pool first thing and jump in floor a few hours. Probably s bad idea not to give the sunscreen time to settle, but that was the mistake. Later, we walked around on the beach and other than walking around for awhile we tried boarding a little on a boogie board (since neither of us have been on a surfboard or boogie board before), it turned out weird xD. There's a story behind a skim board the best time we visit, but it's one not everyone way want to hear, especially if your squeemish.

Anyway to the point, we were out in the sun for about 3 hours at this point. So I decide to just walk back up to the pull and lay back in a pool chair and just rest. Fun fact, the night before we all got temporary tattoos at the small theme park they had where we were at. Once I felt like had enough sweating and summer heat I went back inside to rest. It wasn't until I cooked off, had some pizza, and tried moving around I noticed how red I was. Skin was peeling really bad and peeling it only made it burn more. Like 10x the previous pain, but I couldn't stop wanting to peel it. For the longest time...that tattoo left a bright white imprint on my skin. I'm talking about white enough to show up on my white (Caucasian) skin. So I was left in pain, red, and peeling for about a week.

    The time is upon us...

Went to the beach for the day with friends back when I was 17; didn't apply any suncream for about 6.5 hours out in the sun, before finally putting some on for the last 1.5 hours. Oh boy, did I burn.

Every feasible exposed body part was burnt. Even the parts I didn't know would burn. Did you know that you can get sunburn on the tops of your feet? I do now...

For the next three days, it hurt so much. Every movement, every contact; even lying still in bed hurt. More fool me, of course.

I, like Xanthe, had bad blistering, which would get sweat/water underneath it. Peeling it off was weirdly satisfying, like picking a scab.

I've gotten pretty roasted up myself.

We had a week in Hilton Head, South Carolina where we went to the beach every day for quite a few hours. Pretty much every day, we'd go early in the morning, stay the whole morning out there, grab lunch, then go back to the beach (or go biking), so we saw a LOT of sun. The issue is sunscreen only lasts a few hours, and because it wears out, sometimes it's not obvious you need get covered up again. Not to mention it's so easy to miss certain spots, and when you're out in the sun for that long, bam, no mercy. Ocean water also wears the stuff out sooner than expected.

So, day after day after day... we got pretty cooked out there and tried dumping on that aloe gel, but that only goes so far and it still hurts just to even put a light t-shirt on. And while the burns sting and hurt, the skin peeling off is just gross. I felt like a snake shedding its skin.

im a bigger fan of the red hot chillypeppers to be quite honest!
when i was little. 6-7 ish i found myself wondering if the fireplace in my father's living room was hot on the outside. so what was the best way of finding out?
touching it ofcourse! so i walk over and reach my hand towards it when my father notices and yells at me to not. so i sit down and wait. he leaves the room and i go back and touch it.
that. hurt. i was afraid of fire places for quite a while after that. and i havent done anything that my father has told me not to do after. lessons are best learned with being a dumbass i guess :p

also i have never really gotten sunburn because norway life. what is this sun you speak of?

I hate getting sun burn because I am paranoid about skin cancer. o_o So I am usually pretty careful in the sun. But once I was at a friend's pool and I sat on the edge too long and burnt my legs really bad. They were red for ages and even having a shower was so painful! I still have tan lines from it and it was like 4 years ago now! I had this eucalyptus oil stuff for burns which was awesome though. The only other time I've been really burnt badly was when I was younger at the beach and got burned through my t-shirt because it was a thin white one and I guess the UV just went straight through or something.

On the other hand, when I was in Europe I tanned easily and didn't burn at all. Stupid dry air!
