Drew Barrymore to Host Pokemon Party

It looks like Drew Barrymore is a fan of Pokemon and she is going to celebrate Pokemon’s 20th anniversary in style! Drew Barrymore is going to be hosting a “Pokemon Afternoon Soiree” at the Sunset Tower penthouse on Saturday, February 27th.
The press release describes the event “intimate” and aims to celebrate Pokemon’s unisex fashion, accessories, and home decor. Below is a little of what Drew Barrymore had to say about her Pokemon party:
“I’m immersed in branding and brand expansion every day with my own companies and I think what Pokemon has done here is so smart and such a perfect way to expand their footprint,”
It is true that Pokemon has left an impression as a brand as you can find a Pikachu on almost everything these days. The franchise has came a long way since 1996 and the marketing machine behind Pokemon has helped kept it around for a long time. So maybe Drew Barrymore has a good reason to be a fan of Pokemon.
There is no word on who will be attending Barrymore’s party but it seems like the most sought after stylists, bloggers, and influencers will all be in attendance. Attendees will be able to get free Pokemon inspired nail-art and special gift bags. Meanwhile, the guest will be partying in a penthouse decorated with the “hottest Pokemon consumer goods”.
Though, there seems to be at least one known guest on the guestlist as it looks like Barrymore has booked Pikachu to attend. Either way, it looks like Barrymore has put together a fun Pokemon party for Pokemon day.

Okay, thank you, now I know it's not just me.

There's plenty of great celebrities that I think could be compatible with hosting Pokemon events (heck, I remember seeing Hulk Hogan having a good time with it during the 10th anniversary event in Bryant Park, NYC), but she was definitely not on that list. But yeah... Pokemon nail-art and consumer goods? Like you said, something just seems... weird.

I gotta agree, this is pretty weird. xD

It seems to me like she doesn't really connect with the brand, but more so wants to get in on the trend. And I know just about everyone would prefer a free plushie over nail art...

Are you kidding? Drew Barrymore is SICK! My girlfriend absolutely adores her and has for years, so her hosting a pokemon event is basically mine and Kasinda's favourite things coming together! XD

Drew is a very big advocate for gender equality/gender neutral things, so I think that the unisex aspect appealed to her. She also has young children, so it's very possible that they are into Pokemon.

@Pokemon Trainer Sarah I think there's a huge difference between the marketing of clothes that are typically worn by both genders as "male," "female," or "unisex." For instance, when all the Star Wars merch came out, 80% of ALL clothes were "men's shirts." "Men's pyjamas." "Men's this, men's that." They had a few shirts for little girls which were pink and sparkly and gross (and what the heck, one at Target had a picture of Luke and Leia with a HEART AROUND THEM), and yes, I still got men's clothes. But do you know what? I still got the "men's" ones, but it would have been nice if they were just unisex, because then I wouldn't have felt so...I don't know, a little out of place. Mind you, they all sit way too high to my neck, they're all slightly misshapen for my body, and half of them are WAY too big even though they're the smallest size, which is a specific men's design, but I put up with it. Hopefully something marketed as unisex would be better fitting for all genders.

If you market a certain shirt to ONE gender, is the other gender going to think it's for them? Sure, they could, but it's going to look so much more appealing if it was simply neutral. ESPECIALLY when it comes to children. There have been studies to show that if a child is told that a certain toy is made for their gender, they will naturally perform better at it. And it's not that I hate that they're marketed to men--I hate that the four Star Wars tops I got for Christmas are all for "men" instead of just being designed for whoever. If they were unisex, maybe they'd fit me better! But there were no unisex clothes. There were pink, sparkly ones for girls and ALL the awesome designs for males. And like I said, none of those fit me properly. xD

Personally I think it makes a lot of sense to me, even if it's a surprise, but that's because I actually know stuff about Drew. xD (Thanks, Kas!) Also I would HATE to think that there's a certain "pokemon celebrity demographic" that somehow excludes her. >.> What the heck does that mean? Also, why is nail art weird? o.o Do you know HOW many people paint their nails? A lot. Women and men. I think there's nothing weird about any of this; I just think it's awesome!

At least I know now I'm not alone. It was trending for awhile last night and I was getting notifications about it, but. What? Drew Barrymore is hosting a "Unisex Pokemon" event? Sounds weird enough, but having only select people invited, gift baskets, Pikachu (probably only the most interesting thing there) sounds strange. I mean I'm sure we will hear more later tomorrow, but this sounds very odd. I mean merchandise for it all art unique art isn't bad. It gives a way for everyone to express their Pokemon love in their own way. So, oh well. I guess the way it's explained just makes it sound odd.

    The time is upon us...
