GIF stands for "graphics interchange format" and since "graphics" has a hard "g" sound, it stands to reason that it would be pronounced "giff" rather than "jiff"

ive never understood why this was a debate really :P

Except an acronym functions as an independent word whose pronunciation isn't dependent on the pronunciations of the words its letters stand for.

I never understood the whole "graphics is a hard G" argument. The City University of New York is also known as CUNY. But although the C stands for city, CUNY is pronounced with a K sound, not an S sound.

JIFF because I always have and it seems like the right way to say it in regards to what letters are present. xD

    hard "g," like "gift."
apparently the "creator" of the gif format pronounces it "jiff," but, like everyone else said: graphics. interchangeable. format. how do you say graphics? a hard g. it's not peanut butter.

    plus, it just sounds...butter. heheh.

Listen up, everyone! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, will tell you how to pronounce the acronym "GIF". *clears throat* It is pronounced with a hard "g", as in "guh". Therefore it becomes "GIF"! Not "JIFF"! It is not your standard household cleaning product!

I say gif because jiff just doesn't make sense to me. It also doesn't flow as well. I can understand why that Uni acronym is said with a ck sound, because that's C's first function. At least, that's how I'd see it. Whereas the hard g is G's first function, rather than the sound it shares with J, which is J's first function. Plus, this is jreat:
