I usually buy singles to get the cards I need rather than rip open a bunch of boosters that just give me stuff I don't really need, but then that means I'm often paying $15, $20, or even sometimes $30 bucks just for ONE card. Then there's of course the process of playing with the cards I brought, finding out they're not as great as I thought they would be when giving them a test drive, and then having to repeat the process to fine-tune the decks that I have.

Currently the most expensive card I own is a Lion's Eye Diamond, which is priced at around $75-$80 bucks. And if you think that's crazy, there's a lot of older cards that go for hundreds.
I have a friend into this and I am amazed at how expensive some of the cards are! I went to a prerelease today and played against some guy that had $200 and $140 cards. o_o Anyway, my friend has helped me make a couple of decks so we can play, but what we do is print out all the cards and play like that while fine tuning the deck. Once its perfect, then you can buy the cards and you only end up with the ones you want! (Personally I refuse to spend money on them so I just play with printed ones as I'm only playing with friends) :D
