Ice-type Reviews – Award Ceremony (Part 1)

In the final part of the Ice-type articles is the awards section. After a long time covering this, it’s appropriate to end it with a celebration for the Ice-types as a whole. This article will be covered in two parts, where the first one is mainly for the more straightforward awards.

With that said, let’s proceed if you are ready.

Best Name
Abomasnow

Abomasnow

The winner of the best name goes to Abomasnow. It is a combination of “abominable” and “snow”, or a short form for abominable snowman. It fits the description for Abomasnow quite well, for it is quite a ferocious monster with a scruffy look that makes it look untidy.

Runner-ups: Amaura, Weavile, Vanilluxe

Best Concept
Mamoswine

Mamoswine

A mammoth is an elusive animal since it is extinct, thanks to the warmer climate that do not go well with its fur coat and size. Basing an evolution around the extinction of mammoths is a very cool idea, so it’s great that they went with that. It’s even better that Mamoswine pulls its weight quite well in battle, since its improved defences and powerful attacks are a source of usefulness.

Runner-ups: Cryogonal, Avalugg, Delibird

Coolest
Regice

Regice

You can’t get any cooler with Ice-types, so in a way, it is hard to pick the coolest Ice-type. After some deliberation, I went with Regice, since it has a very cold body that seems to be resistant to melting, and if that’s not all, it is a golem. Its robot-like body gives it a mechanical look. Last but not least, it has a pretty cool sound effect.

Runner-ups: Beartic, Cloyster

Smartest
Weavile

Weavile

There are few Ice-types I would consider “smart”. It was between Jynx’s skilled dancing plus human-like speech and Weavile’s ability to work as a group. In the end, I chose the latter, since Weavile looks a good deal smarter as well. I suppose felines and weasels look like smart creatures, eh?

Runner-ups: Jynx

Toughest
Avalugg

Avalugg

There are several Ice-types that look quite tough, and have the toughness to back that up. Avalugg is perhaps the toughest one, for it looks like a heavy hoofed animal (with spikes at the bottom). In fact, of all the Ice-types, it has the best physical defence! Its attack power is pretty good too, so it is quite a tank.

Runner-ups: Walrein, Cloyster

Most Beautiful
Aurorus

Aurorus

Quite a few Ice-types have a sort of beauty that makes them stand out from the tough guys, so picking one might be tough. In the end, this award goes to Aurorus, the newest Ice-type that looks quite majestic and possibly shiny, even when it’s not a shiny.

Runner-ups: Lapras, Glaceon, Articuno

Cutest
Spheal

Spheal

This award seeks to put the younger Pokémon into the spotlight, because most of the time, the final evolutions are the ones that are most deserving. For this award, I give this one to Spheal, whose rotund body and cute face sealed the deal.

Runner-ups: Swinub, Bergmite

Funniest
Cubchoo

Cubchoo

Cubchoo has a perpetually running nose, with dangling mucus that disgusts many characters who look at it. It’s ironic that an Ice-type does not seem to stand the cold well, and it’s weird that Cubchoo still hangs on to the mucus even during warmer times! I’d even say that just having that snot is enough reason it is a funny Pokémon.

Runner-ups: Smoochum

Scariest
Glalie

GlalieMega Glalie

Glalie’s big face instantly made is something scary, since its exposed teeth meant that it’s not something to trifle with. That mouth looks like it could crunch off something very easily, which it intends to do once it freezes something in place. Perhaps you don’t want to be a target for its hunger, because it will attempt to make sure you stay in place by freezing your movement. Its Mega Evolution is even more terrifying with its unhinged jaw. Bon appétit!

Runner-ups: Froslass, Cryogonal

Weirdest
Vanilluxe

Vanilluxe

The whole line is considered weird, actually. Even though they are shaped like ice-cream cones, they are not called ice-cream Pokémon. It is referred to as a “snow”, and there are no “cones” in its name or the PokéDex entries. Despite this, one could not shake the feeling that they are ice-cream Pokémon, as even Vanilluxe has a “straw” on it. The double-heads even have a mind of their own, and they could even disagree with each other, which seem to be an advantage because of the power it generates.

Runner-ups: Cubchoo

And that’s it for the first part. What are your personal awards for the categories I had chosen so far? Please sound them off in the comments below. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I have writing it.

Thanks for reading.
