Ice-type Reviews Gen 1 (Part 1)

After every Generation of Ice-types are reviewed, there will be an article regarding the selected Trading Card Game art for each Pokémon. With so many different types of cards to choose, picking the one I like is a challenge for most of the Pokémon. Keep in mind that my choices are subjective, so what I like might not necessarily be what you like.

To find out the cards I picked, please proceed.

Dewgong
Dewgong

The early Pokémon card design evokes memories of the early days of Pokémon, where things looked simpler and contains simple colours on its card design (especially the yellow border). With a simple and elegant art to go with it, it leaves a nostalgic impression.

Cloyster
Cloyster

Here, we see Cloyster in close-up, which makes it seem like it’s up to no good. The slight shadow on its head makes it look rather sinister, something you can already tell from its regular expression. That, or it could just be in the deep sea.

Jynx
Jynx

Some would say that Jynx is a creepy Pokémon since it looks too much like a human, but there are other reasons it is creepy. It has this kiss that makes you sleep, and I heard it’s devilish. Jynx certainly looks like it is plotting something even though it’s not made its plot obvious. We also get a glimpse at what Jynx was: a black-skinned Pokémon. Of course, since this doesn’t go well with the west, it became a more fantastical purple-skinned Pokémon later on.

Lapras
Lapras

The artwork is rather manga-like. The soft and vivid colours mixed with white to show the sunshine’s glare sets the tropical mood, and the water colours help. It suits a Pokémon that spends most of the time in the water.

Articuno
Articuno

Choosing Articuno’s card proved to be a challenge, since I had nine candidates (the most of all the Pokémon). In the end, this is the card I picked. It certainly looks bright and beautiful, and shows it with the snowy abilities it is normally seen as a master of. Again, it’s a hard pick, so there might be a better card for Articuno.

That’s all for this TCG Art showcase. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I have writing it.

Thanks for reading.
