Pokemon Mythology in the Modern World – Darkrai

Hello, and welcome to the second entry for “Pokemon Mythology in the Modern World”! These articles will cover the legendary Pokemon and apply their domains in the Pokemon world and how they would adapt to the modern world. Usually, these would tackle the legendaries with little myth or backstory, but the “major” legendaries can also be fleshed out. The articles will feature its Pokedex entries, and there will be a myth/backstory about the legendary, followed by the ideas and/or theories and will be followed up by certain question to guide other forms of theories/head-canons.

Kindly remember that these articles are like theories and are not full-canon or endorsed by official Pokemon staff.

This article will revolve around Darkrai the Pitch-Black Pokemon. Darkrai is known to cause never ending dreams by “possessing”  the victim while he or she is sleeping. But some say that his presence enough will do so.  Anyways, these are uncurable, except when one gets a “Lunar Wing” from Cresselia.

This very short story is quite a creepypasta, so if you have quite a weak heart, then consider yourself warned. This basically expands Darkrai’s domains, going to over being a “Grim Reaper”-ish being.

Darkrai, while being the Messenger of Nightmares, has also the responsibility of checking people’s souls and deaths. He decides when a person’s soul should be reaped and be sent to the afterlife.

He likes reaping souls out of sleeping people. These deaths are when someone sleeps and never wakes up. Painless and quick.

Darkrai would go to the person, pick up his or her soul, and then carry it to the afterlife. But Darkrai can be really clumsy. If he drops the soul, the soul will go back to the body. With quite a thump.

Now, when was the last time you felt like you were falling in your sleep and suddenly woke up?

To summarize, Darkrai would be the god of nightmares and death. His work is usually the same as today’s Grim Reaper. Instead of having a signature scythe, Darkrai would envelope the person in a ball of shadows. Once the ball of shadows arise, it means that the soul is collected.

Darkrai only does his work at nighttime, because he is very sensitive to light. When its daylight, Darkrai hides in his specail place, where it is very dark. Seemingly underground, almost devoid of light. At his “home” he does things that are dark. His pastimes are writing dark pieces of literature, drawing and sketching stuff with dark color values, blogging about dark things. He’s basically a goth.

During the night, when he has nothing to do or if he feels too tired, he would stroll around places like parks and seashores. There, he could relax his mind and get inspiration for his literatures. While Darkrai is on his breaks, his Dusknoir servants do his work. To be honest, the Dusknoir servants are less clumsier.

To compensate for the short article, here is a picture of Darkrai. With legs. Darkrai with legs is canon.

Guide Questions:

1. Give a logical explanation on why Darkrai could give nightmares by his presence alone.

2. Why are Darkrai’s nightmares never ending?

3. If Darkrai could float, what use is his feet?

4. Why could Cresselia control Darkrai’s powers? (Your answers may influence a future article on Cresselia.)
