#1. Ken’s FireRed Kick@$$ Mode
“… It doesn’t matter what kind of person you were before. What matters is what kind of person you want to become…”
I think that one line, spoken by one small Jigglypuff, defines the entire story of Ken’s FireRed Kick@$$ Mode. That the sins of one’s past, the crimes we commit against each other and ourselves… can truly be forgiven. That we are defined by more than who we were. That our choices do matter.
And if a small Jigglypuff can speak a truth that echoes the ages… then surely we can accept her words. And this is why YinDragon’s comic is my #1 pick this week.
#2. Rare Candy Treatment
Let’s face it. Most of the Pokemon trainers we encounter in the games need a lot of help.
They suffer from a lack of type coverage, strategy, or even common sense. So it’s only logical that they attend some sort of course in which they improve their combat prowess.
If Rare Candy Treatment is any indication… this is going to take awhile.
#3. Crystal Double Nuzlocke Challenge
No matter what, parents affect their children in countless ways. Whether present or absent, kind or cruel, caring or unforgiving; parents shape the hearts and minds of those they have given life to.
Silver is a particularly troubled individual, his steps haunted by the sins of his father. His fury at his father’s choices leads him to make a few unfortunate ones of his own. And thanks to Crystal Double Nuzlocke Challenge we discover how he grew from a lonely boy into a angry young man.
It’s a tale worth reading.
#4. Dorkly Comics
Another great, hilarious update from Andy Kluthe, Andrew Bridgman, and Dorkly Comics.
A lot about Pokemon doesn’t make much sense. Why can Pokemon only know four moves? Why does it take an 11-year-old child to defeat world-threatening plots by evil team? How come Professor Oak, a renown Pokemon researcher, can’t figure out if you’re a boy or a girl?
Sometimes we have to take a step back and laugh at how ridiculous it all is.
#5. BlackOut
A fantastic cover for the next chapter of BlackOut by YumeYoroshii.
One of the things I like about Yume’s comic is that the main character often changes outfits. Not that this is necessary, but in the real world, we hardly wear the same clothes every single day. We may wear similar styles, but usually not the same thing. Sure, traveling Pokemon Trainers may be a bit more limited by what clothes they can wear, but it’s good to see them change outfits more than once a season.
Reading BlackOut is simply a joy. Great art, great writing, and a great comic.
