I'm okay with that. We just have to consider it a basic stage Pokemon. I think the card game considers them that.
A few are in that case, like Pikachu. Since it originally started as a basic. So most cases it still gets considered as one. Though I don't think all single stage Pokémon do. Now if they ever get an evolution. Then things might end up a little different.

Honestly if you guys feel like a Pokemon evolution stage shouldn't be counted. We can just say only type will matter towards battles :)

I would say wait it out and see how many you get choosing Pokemon like I chose Pikachu (since technically it is a 2nd stage since Gen 2) and Emolga being a single stage. You don't want any unfair advantages or it being completely against anyone playing.

My initial thought was this. You wouldn't be able to use Pokemon that have pre evolutions.
