    Roommates (Hit or Miss)

In the last six months I finally moved out of my old apartment and now finally after 31 years of life I finally have my own apartment. I moved out my parents house at 18 and really never looked back. In the last 13 years I have had many roommates and learned many lessons from them.

Personally, I would not suggest living with friends. When you first move out of your families home friends are the normally the best option however its important to know that what people are like when you hangout with them varies greatly from what kind of person they are when you have to see them all day long. If you have to move with a friend here are some things Ive picked up.

*Avoid dirty people, while its cool to have a messy friend unless you dont care about your place falling apart or being constantly dirty normally messy people will drive you crazy. They got to use to someone cleaning up after them and will treat you as if it is not your responsibility.
*Couples...Sigh...So you have a friend thats in a relationship and wants to get a place with you. Guess what you are not just getting one new roommate you are getting two! When you come across a problem with something you dont like you better be prepared for them to side with each other over what you say. So please make sure you know the guy or girl that will be joining you and your roommate.
*Job stability- For the most part your first apartment is going to be a piece of junk with people who either just got their first job or have family helping pay their rent. Make sure the person you are choosing to attach yourself is responsible with their money because when things get bad the bills are going to be put on you and this will cause a lot of stress between you two.
*Respect each other space- Its really nice to want to hang out with your bestie all the time. However just like your family gets on your nerves your close friend will eventually start driving you crazy..and you are trapped with them! Give yourself some alone time to just relax. These times of just alone time from each other will help greatly.

Tell us about your experiences with roommates. Are you planning on getting an apartment with a friend? Are you nervous?

I plan on moving out when I can afford it. That is part of the reason why I am working this year instead of going to university. I got in, but deferred for a year.

I think I will find student accommodation when I do go to university. I will be there until I am nearly 25. I am nearly twenty and couldn't handle another five years living with my parents. But I want to be a lot more financially stable first

That sounds like very good advice! I still live at home and have no plans to move out. I don't think I could stand living with another person. I can be a bit of a clean freak and it would drive me crazy if I had to deal with someone messy. Plus I like my alone time and I don't think I could feel comfortable sharing a house with a stranger. Even though I like my friends, I still need a break from them after a while.

Having a room mate sounds sort of fun in other ways, but I don't think I could get past those things. xD

It can b e really cool at first. It also depends on the person. If you give it each your own space and clean up after yourself that should avoid a lot of minor issues.
