Alice held the orb up in the dim light of the cavern. It swirled mysteriously with a deep purple glean.

It started as a rumble, followed by debris raining from the ceiling. Alice pocketed the mega stone, and reached immediately for a Pokeball. The other hand tried to protect her head from the falling stones. An earsplitting screech echoed through the cave. It was impossible to tell where it was coming from, but that was soon made clear when a violent gust forced her to her knees. She cried out in pain as her knees hit the hard rock. She instinctively rolled to the side, barely dodging as something heavy crashed into the stone pedestal where she had been standing a moment earlier, smashing it to pieces.

Without thinking, Alice's arm extended, releasing the Pokeball she had clutched. She didn't know who it was... couldn't concentrate enough to feel their energy through the Pokeball.

"Saur!" Aster appeared in a flash of bright red that blinded Alice. Luckily the Ivysaur seemed to adjust quickly to the dim light, and dodged the whip of the Aerodactyl's tail as it slammed into the ground. The prehistoric beast was magnificent to behold, taller than Alice, its wingspan dwarfed her. She crawled backward, heart racing. She couldn't panic. This was a wild Pokemon. She had disturbed it. She had one chance now to assert her authority, to capture it. Before her, Aster seemed to understand. He dodged the Aerodactyl's swiping talons and came to stand before his trainer, waiting for her command.

"Razor Leaf!" Alice's voice rang out strong, and her partner obeyed. The Ivysaur knuckled down, centering himself, before releasing a flurry of sharpened foliage. The leaves sliced at the Aerodactyl's skin, but the great beast just shook angrily, sending them glacing off against the walls of the cave. Alice had to duck as one shot past her head. "Stop!" she called to Aster.

In a strangely fluid movement, the Aerodactyl launched itself into the air like a catapult and clutched a rock half way up the enormous cavern. Alice couldn't believe how fast it was. In such a small space, it was able to maneuver with a precision she would have thought impossible. Though she felt its hot anger, she couldn't help but be awed by it. A living fossil. It was beautiful.

"We have to catch it," Alice said breathlessly. This was why she had travelled. This is why she had wanted to be a trainer. She had learned a lot on her journey so far, and though a lot of it had not been her choice, she could use it now to tame this beast, to prove herself worthy. In response, the Aerodactyl shrieked, sensing her reluctance to leave its territory unchallenged. It swooped from its perch, heading for Aster, claws outstretched.

"Dodge it, and grab it with your vines," Alice cried out. Aster seemed to understand the significance of this moment. He dodged, barely, skidding hard against the rocky cavern floor. An involuntary gasp escaped Alice's lips as the Aerodactyl adjusted its trajectory. With a triumphant roar, it snatched the Ivysaur from the ground and took off again into the air, slower this time.

"Stun Spore!" Alice cried, panicked. She heard Aster's answering cry, but could see nothing. Aerodactyl was somewhere near the top of the cavern, where it was too bright to see due to the filtered light. Alice coughed hard as the stun spore rained down. She covered her face with her sleeved, waiting for it to pass.

The Aerodactyl screeched in annoyance and then Alice could see Aster freefalling - in its panic, the Aerodactyl had let him go. Alice felt her heart stop. What had she been thinking? The drop was incredible. She couldn't think. She stood frozen as her started plummeted to the ground.

But Aster wasn't done - thin but strong, his vines whipped above him, tethering him to the flailing Aerodactyl that had now come into Alice's view. The vines wrapped around the Aerodactyl's foot, yanking it down hard, as Aster used the momentum to swing himself sideways before lowering himself gently to the ground. The Aerodactyl was flung into the cavern wall. Rocks rained down once more and Alice wondered for the first time how stable the cave was. Already it seemed lighter, as if more holes had opened up in the ceiling. With a mighty crash, the Aerodactyl sunk to the cavern floor, twitching with paralysis.

Alice clenched her fists. Now was the time. She had to approach it, to make it understand she meant no harm. To ask it to follow her, to become her Pokemon. Aster puffed heavily behind her, "Saur," he muttered, concerned, but Alice merely shook her head. She had to be strong now, show no fear. She walked slowly but surely to the struggling beast, making sure to approach it from the front, toward its head, so that it would see her coming and not be surprised.

When she reached it, it had stopped twitching, its eyes closed. Alice let a sigh of relief escape her. Up close, the Aerodactyl was even more terrifying: a jaw of razor sharp fangs, talons perfect for ripping prey and a tail that could easily fling her across the room. She stood before it, back against the rock cavern.

"Aerodactyl," she began. At that moment the mega stone in her bag seemed to react. Its eerie light glowed right through the bag. In a split second, the Aerodactyl lunged at her, its shoulder pressing against her chest, forcing her against the rock behind her. Air was forced from her lungs. She choked, gasping, but the Aerodactyl seemed frozen in place - the paralysis fully taking hold once more.

And then Aster was there, crying for her, trying to move the beast with his vines, trying to shunt it with his body. He tried, again and again, but the Aerodactyl was frozen in place, as if it was made of stone. He wasn't strong enough. Alice felt weak, would have fallen to her knees if the Aerodactyl wasn't propping her up with its weight. She couldn't move her arms, couldn't move anything. She looked into the Aerodactyl's eyes and saw only fear. Alice felt her eyelids drooping, she couldn't seem to get any air. Darkness was closing in, relaxing her muscles. She wasn't afraid, but she felt bad for Aster. She hoped he would go back and find her friends. She hoped someone would take care of her Pokemon.

"Saur!" Aster cried suddenly, and the darkness engulfing Alice turned suddenly to light. It was a brighter light than Alice felt she had ever seen. It felt warm. She wasn't afraid. And suddenly all weight was lifted from her.

She sunk to the ground, gasping, forcing breath into her lungs. Her head pulsed painfully as she blinked, her eyes trying to adjust to the rapid changes in light. The Aerodactyl was still there... but there was something else, something big...

Alice felt strong vines curl under her arms, another cradling her back. In an instant she was off the ground and placed gingerly on the back of her starter Pokemon. "A-Aster," she managed to choke in wonder. He had evolved. She leaned now against the stem of the giant flower protruding from his back. His vines released her. She didn't realise she was crying until she ran her hand across her face. "You saved me," she sobbed, reality hitting her. She struggled for breath as the tears kept rolling down her cheeks. Slowly a familiar scent, like an old forest, filled her head. She felt immediately calmer. The Aerodactyl had also stopped twitching. Alice stroked Aster's ear, thanking him for the Sweet Scent.

Alice's chest hurt terribly, but she reached into her bag, retrieving a Pokeball. She tossed it at the Aerodactyl, and watched as it pinged shut for good. Aster retrieved it with his vine, handing it to Alice. She cradled it gingerly. "I'm sorry Aerodactyl," she said solemnly. "I'll make it up you. I hope you'll let me." She placed the Pokeball in her bag. "Let's get out of here," she said. Her throat had started to hurt from the gasping earlier. She let Aster lead the way out of the cavern and back toward her friends, while she napped lightly on his back.
