Alice had followed the others back to the Pokemon Center. Most of them left to head to the gym, but Alice didn't feel quite ready. She took out her journal and wrote down a few notes, trying to calm herself. She then read through the Pokedex entries of the two Pokemon she had chosen to use in Brock's gym, memorising their attacks.

It was time.

With a deep breath, she headed outside. She would return here afterward, as a certified trainer or as a loser. She grabbed Aster's and Citrus' Pokeballs. "I'm relying on you two," she said. She released both of them.

Citrus fluttered happily beside her, while Aster walked calmly by her side. Just having them nearby made her feel stronger. She stopped for a moment, and called them close.

"I need you to do your best now," she said. "This is our most important battle so far. Let's just go over a few moves. Citrus, show me Sleep Powder!"

The butterfly zoomed upward, flapping his wings gracefully. Sparkling powder drifted down from the sky.

"Now blow it away from us with Gust!"

"Freeee~!" Ctirus swung downward, his wings flapping madly. A blast of wind scattered the powder.

"Well done," Alice smiled. "Now Aster, show us that Sweet Scent, then follow up with Razor Leaf!"

"Saur!" The Ivysaur bounded forward. A pinkish powder began to pour from the flower bud on its back. Citrus seemed involuntarily drawn to the scent. Before the butterfly could approach, Aster sent a barrel of leaves flying through the air, dispersing the attractive powder.
